The North American A-5 Vigilante is an American carrier-based supersonic bomber designed and built by North American Aviation for the United States Navy. It set several world records including long distance speed and altitude records. Its service in the nuclear strike role to replace the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior was very short; however, as the RA-5C, it saw extensive service during the Vietnam War in the tactical strike reconnaissance role.

The bomb was dropped/ejected horizontally out the rear of the fuselage. The aircraft was also used as a tanker, a Photo Recon and ECM.

The new USS Enterprise was the first ship to deploy the A-5.

Reviews: 7
This book by Steve Ginter fills an important void in the history of naval aviation. While I am a fan of the Powell and Peacock RA-5C books (from the Osprey Combat Aircraft Series), and recommend them highly also, this book not only covers developmental and operational history of the Vigilante, but also has extremely detailed photographs and illustrations (many from original Navy manuals) covering all areas of the aircraft, including the cockpits, an area curiously omitted in the Osprey books.

The strength of this book is not only the illustrations, but the captions that go with them which obviously required quite a bit of research. Historians and modelers alike will love this book for its attention to detail and its ease of use: it has developmental and operational histories of the different variants (though most is focused on the RA-5C), a section detailing every unit that flew the aircraft, a review of model kits of the aircraft (Trumpeter's newest model is not covered as it was coming out as the book went to press), and other relevant information.

I commend this book highly to everyone interested in naval aviation, the Vietnam war, or the history of this remarkable aircraft.
Ginter is always great. Lots of development info and photos. Great for modelers. It has the usual through Ginter squadron rundown treatment in the second half of the book. Lots of info and photos and diagrams for tech junkies. I really liked it. Well done Steve once again.

They used to include pilot reports, now they don't and I miss them. Being a pilot and former museum curator, I want to know not only the technical details but what the airplane was like to fly. They did the same thing with the Super Gooney book. Please put the pilot reports back in!!!!!
great reference for model builders.
I was a survival and environmental technician for the Ra5c Vigilante attached to RVAH-1 during the Vietnam war.GREAT PLANE.....GREAT BOOK!! Brought back memories.
I am a big fan of everything produced by this publisher.

It is just what I needed for my research on this particular plane series. I am so glad to have found it.
