Hello All, Today I received my last volume of the eight volume Ordeal of The Union by Allan Nevins. Hello All, Today I received my last volume of the eight volume Ordeal of The Union by Allan Nevins. I obtained the first and second volumes about eight weeks ago at a used bookstore and found out they were part of an eight volume set written by Nevins. I have finished reading the first volume and will be soon starting the second volume. I must say that I have learned a great deal about the prewar politics that led up to the war. The first volume I just read covers 1847-1852. I am glad to be on the journey with Mr. Nevins fine.

Although the early volumes of Ordeal of the Union were assailed by some Northern historians for being excessively critical of the abolitionists, Nevins believed, largely owing to his familiarity with the work of the white Southern historian, Ulrich B. Phillips, that any explanation of the coming of the Civil War must place race at its center. He had no doubt that slavery was the main cause of the war and he condemned the peculiar institution in Ordeal as the greatest wrong, the greatest misery, the greatest curse to the white and black alike that America has ever known.
