Ingaret Giffard had the kind of heightened awareness of events that makes an otherwise ordinary life turn into something approaching epic fiction.
Born in England, Giffard was the first of two children belonging to an emotionally fragile upper-class mother and a barrister father who died when she was six. Impoverished by the father's carelessly written will, the family shuttled back and forth on lengthy ""visits"" to relatives and friends while Giffard, an unusually independent young girl, took over the role of caretaker from her frequently ill and emotionally debilitated mother

Her memoirs then portray her childhood in southern England during World War 1, followed by four years in the hot-house of imperial India, the self-discovery and delight at achieving success as an actress and writer in London, the mixed fortunes of her first marriage and then the deep instinctive pull of her feelings for the young South African.
