Psychosis: Psychological Approaches and their Effectiveness. This is a most timely book as there is increasing recognition by both professionals and users (and also service planners) that psychological approaches for people with psychotic conditions can be effective, and indeed, are often much sought after by users and their families. However, these were rarely considered and often disparaged in the ascendancy of the ‘decade of the brain’.
Psychodynamic contributions to early intervention in psychosis. This article considers the contribution that psychodynamics can make to the work of teams providing early intervention in psychosis. This article outlines approaches to building and maintaining a therapeutic relationship with a patient with psychosis, provides a guide to assessment to assist in treatment planning, identifies some current trends in psychological treatments to augment medication, and examines family support requirements. To maximise patient outcomes in relation to symptom remission, psychological adjustment and return to premorbid functioning, a range of interventions over a period of time may be required.
