One general goal of orthodox behavioral assessment in cases of simple phobia is that of pinpointing the "type" of stimulus control that is involved with those fear/avoidance behaviors that prompted the patient to seek help. One or both of two types of stimulus control will be discovered. In the first, the patients' anxious behaviors are more or less automatically cued by encountering an actual phobic stimulus. Miller and Bernstein (1972) developed a behavioral test to assess overt motor behavior among claustrophobic patients. The test called for subjects to sit in a small, dark, closed chamber until they became sufficiently uncomfortable to terminate the test, or for 10 minutes, whichever came first.
Although this scope is adequate. Pergamon Press, Elmsford, . Hersen and Bellack have structured this book into three broad categories: Fundamental Issues, Assessment Strategies and Evaluation for Treatment Planning. The first section includes two chapters which discuss the general issues and psychometric considerations which underlie behavioral assessment. Conceptually, this structure provides an appealing and logical division.
