Lifting the Lid on Depression by Tomas Woodbridge,Chris Scott

Lifting the Lid on St. .Chris Scott, Tomas Woodbridge (Illustrations). In his new book, Chris Scott highlights in a winning and personal way the key elements of our various depressions and anxieties together with some 'exercises' that help greatly to unpick the processes and habits that can cause and perpetuate both, whilst developing healthy new ones.

This wonderful book lays out very clearly what you need to do differently. The author has simplified the process into five key steps. The steps are not particularly complicated, and with the background information from the book, you are clear what you are doing and why. And because you are learning the tools to get life back on track, this means you can keep it on track, and those helpful changes can be lasting.

Just the word makes my heart sink and my stomach tie itself in knots – what about you? But what is it? Well apart from the obvious decreased serotonin (the ‘happy chemical’ responsible for balanced mood and a sense of well being) it actually has a relatively simple cause: Repressed Emotion. This emotion is usually (but not always) anger – when we internalise anger and fail to l it – it changes form to prevent us from imploding – the body dampens the force down which then results in a sense of numbness AKA ‘Depression’

In The Idiot Brain, he undertakes a journey through the workings of this most complex organ, covering many aspects of the brain’s function. Burnett has a sideline as a stand-up comedian, and this is obvious from the quips with which he lightens his writing. The result is a factual book that is far removed from other dry scientific tomes. The chapters are subdivided into shorter sections, which also eases digestibility. Burnett starts by focusing on the brain’s function in regulating the body’s behaviour.

The gist of it was that the Prince of Wales was so fussy about his soft-boiled eggs that his staff would prepare up to seven for him every morning in the hope that at least one would be done to perfection. Two years later, Mervyn Wycherley, Charles’s private chef during his first marriage, revealed that the prince’s security detail would inform the kitchen as soon as HRH was on his way home for tea. His eggs had to be boiled for exactly four minutes, said Wycherley. It was never anything other than a four-minute egg.

In my experience, the best books on dealing with anxiety and depression are the best because they are honest about the situation. There is this thing that sucks, and you’re not going to magically make it go away. Many of them are looking for a solution or a piece of wisdom or advice. Unfortunately, the only thing I’m qualified to send them is this new care bear emoji I got on my phone

"As this direct and deceptively simple book makes clear, nobody need any longer be condemned to remain in a state of depression. It's possible to learn to break out of this awful state of mind - and learning really is the key word, because once learned this knowledge becomes our own possession. Then we can be confident that even if we have a temporary relapse we don't have to stay there, but can use this knowledge to break out from depressed feelings once again. The ways to do this are laid out clearly in Chris Scott's book." Pat Williams Writer, therapist and Senior Tutor for the European Therapy Studies Institute.
