The Essence of Tantric Sexuality by Rudolph Ballentine M.D.,Mark A. Michaels

The Essence of Tantric Sexuality is a must-read for everyone just beginning to explore Tantra and an invaluable, nuanced resource for more experienced practitioners. Mark A. Michaels and Patricia Johnson have done a stunning job of placing Dr. Jonn Mumford's Gnosticon lectures in context between their ancient roots and their modern application. Most impressive is Michaels' and Johnson’s ability to separate-without prejudice or judgement-the essence of authentic Tantra from the many varieties of popular. This is a great companion to the other book by Mark Michaels and Patricia Johnson "Tantra For Erotic Empowerment". The book is based on the lectures of their guru Dr. John Mumford. These lectures shaped the ideas that later became the foundation of Western Neo-Tantra.

The Essence of Tantric Sexuality by Mark A. Michaels and Patricia Johnson I have studied Tantra for five years and have trudged through numerous books on the subject. Until I read this book, I was under the false impression that Tantric study was demanding, laborious and technical. What occurs in this book is that all of the excess is trimmed away and we are left with a clear path on how to use Tantra to reach new levels of ecstasy. The book is based on a series of lectures given by Dr. John Mumford in 1976.

Mark A. Michaels and Patricia Johnson have written a modern and comprehensive book that celebrates the sacredness of the body (and desire) within the Hindu Tantric tradition, one which aims to dispel remnants of our Puritan past that define many natural activities of our daily life, including sexual activity and desire, in negative terms

Michaels & Johnson have crafted a solid, detailed, and highly readable brief text intended for those with a moderate or greater background in yoga or other Tantric practices.

Interesting, informative book about a subject that is shrouded with mystery and misinformation. Actual transcriptions of talks by a Swami who is an expert on this subject. Covers topics like masturbation in a way that will be new to Westerners. No Puritanical judgments, in India serious students of Tantra use sexuality as a way to self and God realization. Is this really possible? Read the book, make your self pleasuring enlightening instead of guilt producing. As William Blake said:, "A fool, if he continues in his foolishness, will become wise." And if you are fortunate enough to find a partner to practice with, this wisdom could truly transform your love making into something transcendent. Ask Sting :) Worthwhile, recommended!

Full of history, science, Hindu philosophy, medical information, with a touch of humor.
And how it all applies to men and women and towards a better understanding of what makes up the emotions of the sexual union.
Also how to possibly make it better-more enjoyable, but without any "magic potion," rather a better understanding of sex and how to approach the union "Yoga" by understanding what makes us tick.
It also dispels some entrenched sexual taboos by explaining how/why they came into being; making us more at ease with the actions, not feeling guilty about participating/practicing them.
I would (actually have) recommended this to any couple who want to improve their relationships, enrich their sexual enjoyment and perhaps even achieve a new level of consciousness- within/about themselves.

This is a great companion to the other book by Mark Michaels and Patricia Johnson "Tantra For Erotic Empowerment". The book is based on the lectures of their guru Dr. John Mumford. These lectures shaped the ideas that later became the foundation of Western Neo-Tantra. These ideas were twisted and misrepresented a lot by numerous fake "teachers", so it was a very good idea to publish finally the true thing by the true students of Dr Mumford. Mark's and Patricia's commentaries to these lectures also represent a high value.

Whether you are simply curious about Tantra, already know something about it, or are already knowledgeable, this is the book for you. The authors studied with the individual most responsible for bringing Tantric practices to the West, and they artfully, seriously and delightfully pass along what they have learned in this slim volume. "How to" manual, history book, explanation of Eastern philosophy: it is all here.

There is a huge pile of Tantra books available, trying to take advantage of the fact that sex sells. Many of them are exploitive and ignorant. This one is the real deal: expert, wise and loving.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It clearly is not "neo tantra" (thank goodness!), and accomplishes the task of presenting a type of tantra that both culturally sensitive and respectful to south east Indian linage/tradition, while still being accessable for serious western practitioner.

The authors recognize the importance of shakti worship, and also cover some obscure topics such as the use of perfumes and incense.

Sure sex is a part of tantra, but the authors also recognize the importance of the mental component too, such as meditation, concentration, and visualization.

This book is a welcome addition to the library of any serious practitioner.

excellent text and very helpful. I enjoyed the 'modern' interpretation of this very ancient practice. Very readable - with detailed information.

A nice start to something new that I have been interested in for a while. Informative yet easy to understand.
This is not an easy read type book because the auther uses a lot of technobable that is unique enough to spin anyone's head like a demon being exercised.

There is a lot of interfering new-agic but not quite new-agy gabber about stuff that seems almost intended to advertise other books and seminarish stuff without actually advertising it. You actually have to get fairly far into the book to get into any of the titular topic matter and you still get alot of giber-gabber that is hard to understand if you are not trying to become a cultistic member of the author's order of what ever they are (pulling string from one nostral out the other through the sinuses has to do with what now?)

I know my review seems difficult too but that just highlights the complexity associated with reading this book. It does seem to have interesting information but again it is information that you have to dig for and then who knows if it will reveal itself to be true without practicing but I guarentee there are some things they talk about that I will NEVER attempt in all of my lives.

Just thought you should know this before buying this book
