It is the book I was looking for, but it took a 29 year detour to get to me through a library. No marks really good shape - must be a nice library. To clarify, this is a 1989 book. The shipping was timely.

Typical great In Action title about s very forgotten bird. I would buy it used for the savings! There isn't much out there on this bird wish there was more.

Along with the old 'Profiles' series, this is a great intro to a type. Stirling, in this case, the lesser known of RAF night bomber trio. Mackay begins with the specification B12/36, raising the ante from twin-engine bombers carrying light explosives to longer ranging, carrying 2,000 lb armor piercing (anti-ship) bombs. The handicap was a maximum wingspan to fit contemporary maintenance hangar door width. The price exacted was extended takeoff run, limited airplane ceiling and bomb load.
From this beginning, they went into service, were up-engined, added more defensive guns. We see other operational details- turrets from different makers or engine oil coolers- shown in before/after drawings. And pictures of a disturbing number of planes crashed on takeoff.
There are many B&W photos from factory and squadrons, in-flight or crashed. Text explains the progression of improved marks, modifications and assignments (Conversion training, mine-laying, Electronic Counter Measures or glider tug). It tells how they contributed to missions like D-Day, Arnhem, the Rhine crossing and repatriation of POWs after VE day. Modelers will like the drawings of mods to tugs, engines, guns, radomes, and even the Mk V freighter. 10 color sideviews and color paintings on covers. 49 pages.
