Bachand Mies Van Der Rohe: Chicago Federal Center From the moment you walk into the plaza of the Chicago Federal Center you are captured by the sheer openness of space that is formed by its three asymmetrically opposed buildings. The black, planar forms of the buildings dominate the landscape of the square1.

Mies van der rohe (1886-1969). He was born Maria Ludwig Michael Mies. Later, he added his mother's maiden name Rohe and the Dutch van der to become Mies van der Rohe. Most people refer to him as Mies. In 1905, Mies moved to Berlin and without any formal architectural training became an apprentice to furniture designer Bruno Paul. His many significant US projects include the residential towers of 860-880 Lake Shore Drive, the Chicago Federal Center complex, the Farnsworth House, Crown Hall, and the Seagram Building in New York City. Along with Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, he is widely regarded as one of the masters of Modern architecture. In 1913, Mies married Adele Auguste (Ada) Bruhn.

The book shows us full of images of the masterpiece and takes us into the house imaginarily. Black and white photos work very much and some Mies's drawings are also helpful to understand how the house was beyond the notions. It is still quite new and less is more, of course. Composed of a 30-storey and a 40-storey highrise, and the Loop Post Office, the Federal Center in downtown Chicago was designed by Mies van der Rohe and built between 1959 and 1964. For this large commission Mies was able to use his preferred material steel to the maximum extent. The three different forms together combine to create a dynamic urban space. Alexander Calder's steel Flamingo "stabile" sculpture perfectly completes the impressive plaza forecourt. In sensitive duotone illustrations Werner Blaser reveals the manifest and the hidden structural and aesthetical qualities of this work to full advantage.

ISBN 0275495302 (also ISBN 0500201285) is an exclusively black & white, concise and copiously illustrated survey in English only of 51 major works on 203 pages revised in 1972 (first published in 1965) and similar to ISBN 8425214769 published in 1992 by Gustavo Gili (GG) on 208 pages in the Works and Projects series in English and Spanish side by side. A short introductory part on several pages is followed by the main review part presenting each shortly described project in excellent B&W photos, plans, sections, elevations, hard line presentation drawings, models, sketches, etc. The book is ended with a biography, bibliography, list of collaborators, etc. on several pages. Most of 126 only B&W illustrations are technical, but all (incl. B&W photos) are of a good quality, well balanced, crisp and legible. Similarly to the Works and Projects series, it is solid among architectural monographs, but slightly smaller than the same book in the Studio Paperback series published on 246 pages in English and German side by side by Birkhäuser under ISBN 3764356197 (Basel...) and ISBN 0817656197 (Boston), and on 204 pages in German and French side by side by Artemis (Zürich) under ISBN 3760881025 and Birkhäuser (Basel...) under ISBN 3764355514.
