Motor followed hill climbing extensively for many years. But these competitions were so popular and numerous, Motor couldn't do them all justice. As it turned out, only one climb would challenge America's best drivers-Pikes Peak. In the first 15 years of racing, automobile enthusiasts raced on the beach, up hills, around race tracks, on public roads, even where there were no roads. Finally, this mania led to the ultimate contest, a race around the world. The year was 1908; the contest, the New York-Paris Race.

This is the story of motor racing as it once was, from the early days to the fifties; the story of those Olympians who bestrode the tracks - such as Carraciola and Ascari, Fangio and Moss - and of their cars - the Alfas, Mercedes, Maseratis and Ferraris - all giants of another, more compelling age.
