Historic buildings form a large part of the nation's heritage, whether used for their original purpose, as might be the case of a theatre, a railway terminus or house, where some modification may be required to meet its enhanced needs, whilst retaining the integrity of the original structure; or alternatively historic buildings where the use has completely changed and it is reasonable. Retired since 1993, Derek Phillips, was an architect and lighting consultant. After obtaining degrees at Liverpool School of Architecture (first class honors) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology and after spending time as a visitor to the University of Berkeley, Derek became Architectural Consultant to the AEI Lamp and Lighting Company. He then founded his own architectural and lighting practice in 1958, called Derek Phillips Associates, which later became DPA (UK) Lighting and DPA Chartered Architects.

Modern lighting techniques help you showcase and beautify historic buildings! Now you can design better, more efficient illumination for older structures with Lighting Historic Buildings by Derek Philips. You'll know how to incorporate modern lighting into buildings built decades-or centuries-before flourescent bulbs, TV screens, computer monitors and OSHA requirements were invented. The purpose of this book is first to trace the history of daylighting and other sources of light, up to the end of the 19th century to show the effect light has had on the form of buildings; and second to establish how architects and designers today should approach the lighting of historic buildings in the context of present day technology.
A major portion of Derek Phillips' book is devoted to 'design'. Sufficient technical detail is provided in the book to permit an understanding of the design principles of each scheme. Schemes illustrated vary from small domestic buildings, churches and workplace, to those devoted to leisure and sport. He has published numerous books and papers on the subject of lighting, including 'Lighting Historic Buildings' and 'LightingModern Buildings' for Architectural Press.
