Deborah Kellaway, who has died suddenly at the age of 83, was an exceptional English teacher and a gifted gardening writer. The first of her five books, The Making of an English Country Garden (1988), "helped to raise the standard of garden writing universally", according to fellow garden writer David Wheeler. For the last 10 years, she was gardening columnist on the Oldie magazine. Deborah's garden writing had some of the narrative satisfactions of a novel.
