Reviews: 3
If you are an artist or teacher this is a very nice reference to own. The designs and patterns are sorted by culture and country.
I gave the book a 3 star rating because the color register was off on each page of designs. I admit I bought a used copy.
Otherwise I think it deserves at least 4 stars, not every country is listed in this book, but there are enough to browse through and really get an idea of how patterns and color use differ with each culture. Incidently, this is a good reference to have at your fingertips if you are a Zentangle artist, the patterns are endless.
Amazing book
With its sharp detail and metallic inks, this particular printing makes a stunning coffee-table book. But its true value for surface designers and mixed-media collage artists goes far beyond a status symbol: all the designs are long out of copyright, so clear they can easily be
scanned or photocopied, and well-organized according to their culture of origin. Jone's 150-year-old commentary can seem pretentious and even racist when viewed against 20th Century design principles, but the designs themselves are masterfully-drawn and gorgeously-reproduced.
