I found this book in a charity shop and as I as I love fruit I decided to give it a go, not that fruit nowadays is worth eating! I have more Good Food books and I have to say that so far they haven't wowed me completely. Many of the recipes are mock recipes: buy some stuff, put it together on a plate or a bowl and do as if it was your creation. The same goes for this book. Some of the recipes are so overly simple that you actually don't need a cook book in order to make them but others are maybe nice. I have read it from cover to cover but I haven't tried any recipes yet, so I can't tell. One should also note that these books must be quite old and therefore they never seem to use up any full container of nowadays ingredients like cream. More modern recipes often use the full tub, which is rather handy. Not on these books though…. The idea of using unsalted butter is also a bit weird because that little bit of salt in the butter does bring out the flavours of whatever you are cooking. At least they don't tell you to use unsalted butter and then add salt, like many more modern recipes.

All in all the book could be better but I am sure that I will make some good desserts using these recipes!
With the world suffering from a bit of an economic downturn presently, prices seemingly rising all of the time and more and more pressures on our lives, there might not be as much spare money for visits to restaurants and the like.

With this little BBC Books marvel, forming part of a highly-acclaimed series of cookbooks, you get recipes for 101 budget dishes that can keep your fed with tasty meals without breaking the bank. You are not relying on baked beans and variants of toast! Many of the recipes could equally be at home on a restaurant or bistro menu.

As with all books with this series, each recipe is accompanied by a full-colour photograph of the dish. Making for browsing heaven if nothing else. The recipes are split into six main sections - feed the family for less, weeknight wonders, entertaining on a budget, money-saving lunches and leftover ideas, thrifty soups and sides, value cakes, bakes and puddings.

Every BBC GoodFood book is just pure excellence. Each recipe is simply laid out, a pleasure to follow, contains all relevant information (even preparation and cooking times) and feature many hints and tips too boot. Written to be fuss-free and friendly you just get the recipes and a lot for your money too.

One cannot say much more. Some of the BBC GoodFood books are a bit specialised, but then if you don't like chocolate you don't buy a book of 101 chocolate recipes! General books like this should be an essential part of your kitchen library. Even a millionaire with a retinue of cooks should buy it - if only to get some ideas for food and to pass on to their staff.
