A half century after the Korean War, North and South Korea are still divided and comprise one of the world's foremost trouble spots. American and Korean experts present differing opinions and analyses on the economies, human rights records, and military and foreign policies of these two nations that have evolved in strikingly different directions.

I try to read as much as possible about Korea, both North and South. I found this book while working on a research paper and I ended up buying it.
It covers many issues dealing with North/South Korea, but it doesn't only give you a one-sided story. The editors found some of the leading writers/scholars on the topics presented and had compiled opposing view points so that the reader can decide for him/herself.

The topics covered are:
1) Is North Korea a serious threat? (4 articles)
2) What is the State of Democracy in North and South Korea (4 articles)
3) What should US policy be towards North and South Korea? (6 articles)
4) What is the future of North and South Korea (6 articles)
The Rollers of Vildar
This is better than most in this Opposing Viewpoints series, with articles on politics and human rights issues in both N and S Korea. A cogent observation in comparing the two Koreas is that, in a planned economy, money means nothing. Taking a global perspective, the book explores relationships between the two Koreas, and neighbors China and Japan, along with political interference by the USA and humanitarian aid by the EU. Australia is considered to be under nuclear threat. There are articles on either side of the unification issue. Most think that it is not a significant near term possibility. There appears to be sporadic progress in six party talks aimed at resolving both political and social issues. There are repressions of the Kim Jong family dynasty in NK with prison conditions and a series of abductions. The book asks if NK is a serous threat to rest of world? The con side articles are the more convincing.
China's objective is stability. The US has seen very checkered results starting with Carter's conciliatory policy followed by Clinton's escalation and sanctions following NK breaking their agreement followed in turn by Bush's “axis of evil” statements. North Korean children are taught to hate the US, stemming from the Korean War.
The book was compiled just a bit too early to see Park Guen-hye as president, although it does mention her background as de-facto first lady after her mother was assassinated. Of course there is no speculation on the efficacy of her new 'Trustpolitic' policy. Her predecessor discontinued the 'Sunshine' policy of aid to NK demanding apology for the Cheonan sinking and the raid on Yeonpyong. Kim Jong-un has been ingeniously portraying an impression of dangerous instability to promote a conciliatory groveling attitude in the West, primarily in USA foreign policy. Media manipulation of news to portray NK as the epitome of evil is not helpful.
