Concepts, techniques, and case studies are well integrated so many design and implementation details look obvious to the student. Exceptionally clear explanations of concepts are offered, and coverage of both fundamentals and such cutting-edge material like encryption and security is included.

The book is good at introducing a concept and the issues surrounding it, but don't expect much in-depth discussion. The homework questions are terribly ambiguous; my professor assigns homework from the book but must add clarification to at least 50% of questions.

It's a good book, but it really takes a while to wrap your head around the concept view of operating systems presented in this book. If it's the book that you've got to read for your class, you've just got to make the best of it!

This is a perfect textbook for Operating Systems at any undergraduate level offering in the midst of other standard texts, and I am surprised why it took me so long to appreciate its appeal. Granted that the final chapter on the Distributed Operating Systems needs to be rewritten, but the rest of the book is a pure gem. The problems at the end of the chapter, often enough, are surprisingly challenging particularly to those desiring to advance to masters' level. I wonder how well the power-point lecture notes stand out compared to the entire book. I can hardly wait.
