I've referred to this quite a lot. Requires you to be a little forward thinking at times or have some background knowledge as there is some hand-holding, but not everything will be described in great detail. However, repeat the initial steps through repetitive situations and you'll get the lesson. I still refer to this when rigging characters. Great book though feels dated now.

This book is good for someone already familiar with Maya software. Has clear instructions on how to follow tutorials. Some of the stuff is redundant.

This book was required by one of my 3d animation classes. after doing several of the tutorials my class mates and i realized that the authors frequently skip steps, have poor image examples, and are hard to learn from. i do not recommend this book to anyone.

Great book for those that are just starting Maya or those getting to know a new version, but if you are wanting to learn Maya and have never used it this book will be hard to fallow.
Let me say this first, I am an Animation student who focuses on modeling. Before reading this book I have had a couple of years to practice a majority of the tools mentioned in this book. Keep that in mind.

This book is great if you are trying to learn how to Character Model in Maya. However the animation techniques in this book are a bit hard to follow. If you need a book for character modeling this is the book but it is not very helpful (in my opinion) for animating.

In the modeling side it covers modeling with Polygon modeling and Nurbs modeling.
It provides step by step modeling assistance assuming you don't know the tools very well.
If you have prior knowledge this book might seem a bit basic at first but does have some advance techniques that can keep a reader who has prior knowledge busy.

Pros:
- Teaches Polygon and Nurbs Modeling
- Goes over techniques for both types of modeling
- Step by step easy to follow modeling
- Hands on for beginner and advance Maya users

Cons:
- Animation techniques can be tricky to follow
- Tutorials don't always work (the disc mine came with has some that work and others that don't)
- Might be too advance for new users (read Introduction to Autodesk Maya first or watch some tutorials on Youtube)

Reason I gave it a 4/5:
- Covered what I was wanting to get out of this book.
- Easy to follow (for the most part)
- Tools mentioned have stayed relatively the same (though menus have changed slightly, I use Maya 2014)
- Some tools have become out of date (Maya 2014 has better tools than Maya 2010 had)
