This is probably the most disappointing masterwork I've read in a while. First, it contains only 10 issues making this a very brief masterwork. I don't believe a masterwork has had so few pages since the "original 27" of the late '80s and early '90s. Second, the stories were not exactly gripping. Writer Roy Thomas did a lot of fine work in this period but not on the Daredevil book. The 10 issues here are completely dominated by Daredevil's relationship to Karen Page to the utter detriment of the other elements of great superhero fare, villains, plots, action, etc.

The major redeeming feature of the book is the artwork of Gene Colan. Although not one of my favorites Colan gives the book a consistent and comfortable feel and leads one to believe that it was this that enabled Daredevil to avoid cancellation. The reproduction is up to the high masterworks standard.

Extras consist of a few pages of original art. I hope the low page count is due to a reluctance to split long story arcs coming up but Daredevil in this period is a blank page to me. I hope the series gets better soon or follow up volumes might be fewer and farther apart.

The villains are weaker than the earlier villains. The plots are less fun than in the earlier stories. However, I always bought DAREDEVIL for one thing: GENE COLAN'S art! He's THAT good.
