I was hesitant about it being a 2-story book, the Valiant and then 200 years later -U.S.S.Stargazer. However, after reading a few pages, I was glad to read the backstory to the valiant. It was similar, but not a copy of the TOS story. Valiant was an older ship.
It doesn't go on any longer than it has to before leading into present day Stargazer. I really enjoyed the events that fate had for 2nd officer Picard. I like this way better than 'Enigma' because Friedman doesn't convolute the book with excessive characters. The story kept me guessing and I was happy to have found out my predictions were wrong about 2 characters. This is what makes good writing- keep them guessing. 'The Valiant' is a good romp. I read it within a week during Lunch breaks.

This is one of the first Star Trek books that I've read since high school. I chose it because of my interest in Picard's service on the Stargazer. After reading it, I feel as if I have a better understanding of how Picard became such a thoughtful and resourceful captain of the Enterprise in the later Star Trek timeline. Overall, its a fast paced book that is definitely plot driven. There are moments when I felt something was lacking like when major characters were lost and the rest of the crew seems to easily move on without much grieving. However, the compelling plot kept me from focusing on these shortcomings of the author. I look forward to reading all of the books in this series.

This book should be labeled book zero of the Stargazer series. It tells the tale of how Picard came to be in command at such a young age, and what happened to set the stage for the continuing adventures in the rest of the Stargazer books. I enjoyed it immensely. I always like to get the back-story/history of things I am interested in, and this book series certainly fits that bill. Reading about the early days of Picard's career has been very interesting, and very enjoyable.

4 stars =)

The book is great. The adaptation of the book is poor and abridged with sound effects and is only two hours long. Buy the book enjoy the story save your money.

Very good book, and great reading. Great backstory on the Enterprise-D's future captain Picard and his first command the USS Stargazer.

One of the best Star Trek stories I have read. If you like this book, you will love the other books in the story line.
All in all it was a great story despite the countless spelling errors that consisted of random spaces in words. Although I felt the first 5 chapters were a rip off of the tos episode with Gary Mitchell I mean I know why it was wrote like that, but just seemed that way is all.
