Damien, the Leper by John Farrow

Damien the Leper book.

The great adventure of Damien the Leper began quietly over a century ago. Since then, his remarkable story has become legend throughout the world. Joseph De Veuster left his secure life in Belgium, thrusting aside all thoughts of personal danger and spending the rest of his days as Father Damien comforting the sick and the dying. John Farrow brilliantly takes us into the heart, mind and soul of a man who gave all of himself to Christ. It is an adventure on every level, a delight for the senses, as Damien fights his way through the jungles, waterfalls and diseases of the tropics to bring God to the islanders.

The story was an amazing one. I did not know all that was involved in Fr. Damien's offering of self. There were interesting things brought to light about the experience/thinking of the times, also. I found the book started a bit slow, for me. But it quickly picked up with the fascinating story of Father Damien and the people of Hawaii.

I have been inspired by accounts of the life of Saint Damien since visiting the leper colony on Molokai 2 years ago. This book adds to my knowledge and inspiration.

A tribute to a great hero and a well done and accurate portrayal. He was really a martyr because he exposed himself to this deadly disease to serve those who had been abandoned by the rest of the world.
