In this Gold Medallion Award–winning book, Philip Yancey reveals a God who is neither capricious nor unconcerned. Where Is God When It Hurts? will speak to those for whom life sometimes just doesn’t make sense. And it will help equip anyone who wants to reach out to someone in pain but just doesn’t know what to sa. .There is no better book on the subject of human suffering than Yancey's Where is God When it hurts. I have not read something by Yancey that didn't challenge or stretch the way I think about my Christianity.
That's what Philip Yancey attempts to answer in his classic book Where is God When it Hurts? Originally written in 1977 when Yancey was in his mid-twenties, it went through a major revision in 1990 (I can't speak to any differences between the two versions because I've only read the more recent one). And though he was young when he first put pen to paper, this book is filled with wisdom. Wisdom gained by listening to others. In part 2, Yancey asks another important question, 'Is pain a message from God?' He acknowledges the places in Scripture where suffering is sent by God but he makes an important distinction. God always warned people - in hopes that they would repent.
Where Is God When It Hurts? is a revision of Yancey's 1977 book by the same title. Yancey was asked several times to respond to the theme of suf-fering after the events of September 11. He decided to remain silent and instead reached an agreement with Zondervan Press to republish this book in a format that allowed it to be half the original price with the cover noting, "All author's royalties and publisher's profits will benefit the American Red Cross

This was a book I could not not write. Thirteen years after its initial publication, I went back and revised it in view of all I had learned since. I have heard from hundreds of readers since then and it astonishes me that even now sincere Christians spread guilt and confusion instead of comfort when tragedy strikes. I hope this book sounds a different note, presenting a God of all comfort, in Paul’s phrase. Zondervan, 1977, 1990). Platinum Book Award, ECPA, US, 2002. Gold Book Award, ECPA, US, 1992. In the book, Where Is God When It Hurts?, Yancey tells of a woman named Claudia who was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph glands. Different people from the church came to Claudia's bedside with different wellmeaning notions. Claudia's suffering made Philip Yancey write his book, on the quest to find where God is in the midst of suffering. His answer came in the realization that the world is imperfect. There is a great deal of unfairness and pain.
I wish more people would read Philip Yancey's book and realize the Truth about pain and hurts. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 18 years ago. This book is not only about how God views our suffering, and how much we struggle with God in the midst of our suffering (although it does thoroughly discuss those things)
