Automotive Marketing Senior Executivefrom Portland, Oregon. I always knew that I was transgender; or at least I knew that I wasn’t like everybody else. As a young child growing up in Montana, I learned pretty quickly that violating gender norms was not acceptable. I knew that I didn’t relate to my birth name and I knew what I wanted to be called, but I also knew that I needed to keep it to myself. Later as I was reaching adolescence, I developed a persona that existed only in private. After college, I began my career and was soon living a life as a successful executive. I would reinvent myself every three to four years by taking on new challenges. I had the perfect family, the custom built house in the right neighborhood, all of the trimmings that should have made me happy and self fulfilled. My whole life I had been outrunning myself.
I found myself unmoored, unmated, ungrounded in a way that challenged everything I’d ever thought about human relationships. Situated squarely in that terrifying paradise called freedom, precipitously out on so many emotional limbs, it was as if I had been born; and in fact I was being reborn as the woman I was to become. There was a time when I had lost all the belief in myself and lost myself completely. Continuous failures and screwed up friendships made it even worse. I had lost where to go in life, what to do with my career and to whom I should seek for help.
This virtuoso book was originally prepared for a Spanish museum exhibit, and it is the definitive, scholarly and most inspirational book on this magical topic. Chapters, all superbly illustrated, include ‘Requiem for the Staircase’, ‘A Lesson in Architecture’, ‘A Theatre of Power’, ‘From Art Nouveau to the Present Day’. Salter’s topics range broadly over his fifty-year writing life, and some books may more of less compelling for your interest (for example, The Hunters’ is about wartime pilots).
Magazine stories are often of this type of literature. Look for Drama in real life type stories. When writing a novel, you could be stepping out onto quicksand if you use your friends as your characters. Consider your target audience. If this book is going to serve primarily as entertainment for the same group of friends, no worries, go for it. If your goal is to have it published, I would advise you create new characters. They could be based on people you know, or even yourself.
