I'm in my late 50s and have always exercised, different programs, different degrees of success. I've got some interesting illness and injury situations that, in the past few years, have left me exhausted from doing small things. Things like carting the groceries from the car to the house leave me worn out. A few years ago, cleaning up after a blizzard had me so tired I hardly moved for two days. I was clearly not getting any stronger and stamina was becoming a concept I might be leaving in the past.

I've tried several programs over the last few years, aiming to correct the strength and stamina problems. Most were way too hard for me, even at the beginner level. Some were far too easy. There was nothing in between. Then... I saw this book on Amazon. Hmmm. Isometric work was one thing I hadn't tried. I thought, okay, it won't kill me to try it.

The first few days, I just did the warmup. That's all it took to think, holy cow, I feel better. Not lots, not magically all fixed, but better. Then I added the classic iso exercises, as recommended, a third of the program each day. After a couple of weeks (increasing the warmup reps by one every three days, as recommended), I thought, I do feel a bit stronger. A hip that had been wobbly for years was behaving better, and a knee that had been sore for months wasn't complaining any more. Now I've added the power flexes to the mix, so I do the warmup, a third of the classic iso, and a third of the power flexes every day. (All told, I do the whole program twice a week and take one day off. Not bad, and not a huge amount of time each day.)

What makes this program great is that you don't do anything any harder than you feel comfortable doing. It's amazing how, after just a few days, I noticed that my "powerful resistance" was, indeed, a good bit more powerful than it had been previously. The other thing that makes it great is that it works everything, even your fingers. For me, that means I can do a lot more knitting before my hands get too sore to continue; for that matter, I generally stop knitting now because I want to do something else, not because I can't do it any more.

Here's the amazing part. I'm in Chicago, and we got hit with about 18 inches of snow yesterday. My driveway's about 100 feet, anding at the street, and my snowblower decided to take the day off after clearing the driveway and sidewalk once. So I went out later and shoveled the whole thing. This morning, I saw that overnight, the snow had drifted to 3 feet in some places, most notably at the street end of the driveway. The plows had come through, so I had about 3 feet of heavy, icy snow chunks to clear, along with anywhere from 1 to 3 feet of powdery snow to clear out of the rest of the driveway.

Before this program, all of that shoveling would have just short of killed me. Today, having just finished the job, I'm not even tired. I don't know that I want to do it again, but I believe I could do it again if I had to.

This book is definitely worth a try.

I've been into Isometrics for years and have religiously implemented them into my daily workout routines. I am 58 years old but if you saw my body, you'd think I was a 30 year old athletic studly guy! Just saying! NOT bragging! Isometrics, when done correctly are extremely beneficial to attaining that SVELT, tight, muscular body. This book provides everything you need to know about the dynamics of isometrics and how they can tone your body, build muscle, burn fat, reduce cholesterol, reduce blood pressure, enable you to have a very positive mental disposition and overall be in absolute GREAT shape! Incredible mental, physical guidance!!! Thank you for this incredible knowledge that ties into what I thought I already knew!!

Very well done! Book has great pictures, and a comprehensive series of exercises involving isometric based training techniques. But for me the real pleasure came in the form of the author's exhaustive retrospect on early turn of the century pioneers in physical culture and body development. The research is not only thorough but very respectful and am glad to add almost affectionate for the hard work these early pioneers had overcome. Back when there wasn't a health club on every corner, half the vitamins back then weren't even discovered. But I drift, topic is well covered, exercises elaborate, and for the novice exerciser very motivational.

By reading this book, and giving the exercises a try, i got rid from another cliché : "You have to move and do a lots of reps to get/stay fit."

I'm doing bodyweight exercises regulary, so i'm what you could call fit, but by trying the exercises in this book
- i was really exhausted after a workout, i was in sweat, and i even had sore muscles the day after the workout, and all that nearly without moving.
Isometrics build force quickly, develop dense and sculpted muscles, and protect your joints.
I think i will integrate those Isometrics and Isometric Powerflexes in my training schedules.
Give i t a try, you will be astonished.

Phenomenal publication! Crammed full of invaluable nearly forgotten information. A must have addition to any library where people are tired same old humdrum workouts. Mr Peterson did an excellent job throughout the book, the only improvement I would ask is that he make more of his books available on ebook format.

If you have never done Isometric exercises before, this book gives you a good overview and introduction to this form of exercise. John Peterson covers historical personas from the world of physical culture that have used isometrics to forge their physiques. He breaks the exercises down by body part. He also includes the historical scientific experimental data that shows why isometrics work. He also includes a section on isometric powerflex which is a different kind of isometric exercise but also useful for building strength. I like that the book is spiral bound. It helps when looking at the exercises. I thought the price was a little high, but overall I'm glad I bought the book. Good info about isometrics. And isometrics is worth adding to my exercise routine

I have a hip replacement and have also broken both elbows. This rules out so many forms of exercise for me. Mr. Peterson shows how to maintain muscle tone and fitness without getting hurt. Almost all of these exercises are OK for me. That's a big deal and he has plenty of pictures. He explains how this is beneficial, even for kids, and has a history of great body builders and how they used isometrics. I am very happy to have found this book.
A great book. My strength has increased due to the isometric exercises. This book is a must for people who want fast results.However there are no clear instrutions on what days a person should do what exercise so if you are going to buy this book, you are going to have to think for yourself on what to do in terms of an exercise program.As for me, I am planning to buy more of the author;s books.
