The Awakened Heart: Living Beyond Addiction by Gerald G. May

This book The Awakened Heart was recommended to me by my assigned spiritual director at a recent three-day silent retreat as I confessed how elusive the sense of the loving presence of God so often is in my life. This book represents May’s attempt to elucidate the classic Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. Gerald May masterpiece brings me peace, even in the reading.

Life changing......and absolutely points out with clarity how important our heart is. It is the well-spring of life. Yes, it has desire....but that is the starting point of all things created, not something to be feared or beaten down. Too often desire gets a bad rap.....it does because of how we often choose to feed it. The choices are unhealthy...desire in and of itself is not only HEALTHY, its a must to have life to the fullest.

Gerald May is a master at walking a simple person, like myself, through the deep topics of the heart......including why we get attachedaddicted, how healthy desire is important, and the dangerstrapssnares that tempt us to meet those desires through unhealthy choices. But this isn't a book aimed at beating you down for your old patterns of living....it is a book about how our hearts CRAVE to be whole and healed. In a very inviting way this book took me to my deep heart wounds....some of which I wasn't fully aware of.....and helped me understand MYSELF better. As this book did this I found the pull to unhealthy choices lessen and a craving for healthier ones.

This book guides you in the direction the true gospel does.....that restoration is not only possible, it is probable! Moreover....it is what life is aimed at doing, if we combine the courage to process life rather than numb it or run from it WITH new-to-us choices that only trials can humble us enough to go out and seek.

Gerald May absolutely opened my eyes to choices that were right in front of me....but ones I did not see. Why the blindness? Because in addition to numbing the pain, unhealthy choices blind you to healthier ones.

Nah.....I'm not "all better" after reading this book, but I'm a far sight better than I was!!! PLUS, this book did start a pattern of being able to sit with my painful feelings, process them, dig under them, and understand what my truest desires are at that time.....and it is soooo freeing to NOT have the reach into addiction be the first thing on the shelf anymore. Thank you Gerald May (and God).
This book was not what I expected. It was better. It put a spiritual aspect to the human desire for love...that only God can fill. Also I have a different picture of what heaven is like. It's not stagnant or boring. We will be working and growing. We'll live in excitment and wonder. We won't be sitting on a cloud and playing a harp for all eternity.
