Raymond Joseph Hoffmann is a historian whose work has focused on the early social and intellectual development of Christianity. His work includes an extensive study of the role and dating of Marcion in the history of the New Testament, as well the reconstruction and translation of the writings of early pagan opponents of Christianity: Celsus, Porphyry and Julian the Apostate.

Hoffmann has also published English translations of three early pagan opponents of Christianity.

What does the Bible really say about capital punishment, government, the future, marriage and divorce, miracles, segregation and intolerance, slavery, war, wealth, women and the world? While literalist Christians insist that the Bible supplies all the anwers for today's ethical and social questions and liberals claims that the Bible can hardly be understood without the aid of advanced criticism, this collection shows that "what the Bible says is far more important than what its interpreters say". The Bible's position is quite clear - and clearly contradictory - on many issues. This book consists of views from around the world, on what the Bible really says.
