SW Frames is a massive box of two mighty tomes, so we have to discuss dimensions here for a bit first. Weighs around 8kg/18lb --- the total box is about 3.25 in thick by 12.5 x 14. It deserves the coffee table all by itself, or an entire special shelf or other place that can take the weight.
My copy was shipped to me in Three Boxes -- the old box-in-a-box-in-a-box deal, with the actual item packed tightly into the smallest one : in other words, Amazon *really* cares sometimes.
Also, compared to the outrageous upper-crust-affordable-only prices of the first edition of Frames, this edition's price is a steal. This edition's original SRP is $150, but Amazon and more reasonable booksellers sell this for closer to, or less than, $100.
The outer package snugly contains the 2 volumes (a trilogy in each one). After short intro.s/forwards by J.W. Rinzler (author of all of the modern Making of SW movies books) and fantasy film director Guillermo del Toro, the books proceed with two film frames per page.
As one would expect, the frames range from action scenes to landscapes to creature shots to character moments. Of course, for some fans, there's the inevitable disappointment of a variety of scenes/characters/etc that were omitted; however, you get a wide range of shots.
Also, when it comes to the classic trilogy volume, you are getting images from the 1997 and 2004 Special Editions of those movies.
Despite the limitations, it is a gorgeous piece of work, with a massive set of great visuals from the six main films of the saga. Just be sure to dust off a sizable space for it, and be ready for its cinderblock weight, and you're good.

I was uncertain about spending so much on this book. But I'm really glad I kept my pre-order.

It arrived today from Amazon TRIPLE-boxed. At 21 pounds, it really needed that!

More than 1400 frames between the two books, and they really tell a story. If you'd never seen the movies, you could read this like a graphic novel and you would understand the whole wordless story. The frame choices are evocative. I found myself "hearing" aunt Beru calling for Luke, hearing Boss Nass's spitting noises. The choices of frames were phenomenal. And it was apparently a truly monumental task to create this book. Lucas began working on in it 2005! He could have given us another movie or two with all of the work which went into this.

The first 4 movies were all shot on film. Episodes 2+3 were recorded digitally. As a result, they look very different when examined as single frames. They look like paintings or heavy ink work. But this is apparently accurate. These are essentially the raw frames - no airbrush or editing. What you see is what you would see on a theatre screen. I measure each page as 12"x 13.5". There are two frames per page.

Since I was a kid I've wanted to hold Star Wars in my hands. I wanted to be able to stare at the images which raced by my eyes. It led to buying lots of toys. But, maybe this book is what I really wanted all along. Now I can just stare and drink it all in.

Here's the bottom line: If you like Star Wars, this is the only Star Wars book you've ever needed. It's not background or expanded adventures. It IS Star Wars. Don't think about it, buy the sucker!!!!

This two-volume set is a well organized visual-only chronicle of the original six Star Wars movies. It you are a fan of the movies, you just gotta get this set on principle if nothing else. ;) But seriously, while I initially had reservations, upon exploring the books first hand, I found a bit of subtle creative "genius," if you will, in showcasing the material in this manner. Huge scenes and depictions. Grand landscapes. intimate moments. Enormous battles. Sure... nostalgia sappiness, but actually a pretty compelling way to explore the movies "again." And with George and company's personal touch no less. Beautiful set worth exploring.

The novelization for all of the Star Wars books is great, but - just like the others - to gain a depth of understanding and detail about the Star Wars universe, reading the novels is necessary. While not particularly revealing compared to the Prequel novels, small details and other storylines are picked up in the novel. I also like the reading style of the books; it engages the mind and the imagination, and helps “slow” the story down from the often frantic pace of the films. I recommend getting the novelization for all of the films for these reasons.
