Winter Rabbit, written and illustrated by Patrick Yee, is a story about two friends building a winter rabbit. This rabbit comes to life and joins the friends in some winter adventures. They eat a large meal before the big sleep, they ice skate down at the pond, and they have a snowball fight with some more friends they meet along the way. The five of them make snow angles an ride down the big hill until it is dark. The story end with the two friends getting ready for the big sleep. I can see younger audiences enjoy this book more than older because of the simplicity of the text and the vibrancy of the artwork. Each page contains animated characters and scenic backgrounds to reinforce the winter theme. Since this story is focused around the season of winter, it would make a wonderful book in the classroom to build a unit off o. .

In this book a bear and a squirrel build a rabbit of snow and then spend the day interacting with it. The other characters in this book are two polar bears that show up to have a snowball fight. As an adult reading this book I felt it was blah and the sentences were choppy. However this book would be good for new readers because the sentences are all short and most of the words are simple. I read this to my toddler, who listened intently. This was not one of his favorites but neither was he uninterested. The illustration style is childlike as depicted by the cover art,

I fill in reading for a friend at the library when she has a conflict of schedule and this week one of the children wanted a winter story so I picked Winter Rabbit to read to the small group of preschool children. They wanted me to reread the story, which is an indication that they liked the story in the middle of our extra hot weather.

The illustrations are attractive to young children, age appropriate and match the story line. It is a simple story of two friends (bear and squirrel) working together to build a snow rabbit and then playing with it and sharing it with other friends. Winter Rabbit has a variety of topics to start learning discussion with young children. It is a book I will use again with preschool children.
