Bling Blang by Vladimir Radunsky,Woody Guthrie

Vladimir Radunsky was born in the Ural Mountains of Russia. When he was still a relatively young man (1982), he migrated to the United States. Since then he has illustrated many books for children, including The Maestro Plays by Bill Martin, J. Ucka Drucka Droni, translated by his wife, Eugenia, An Edward Lear Alphabet and Discovery by Joseph Brodsky. The nursery songs of Woody Guthrie appealed to him in part because they reminded him of the songs he loved as a child growing up in Russia. Woody Guthrie was born Woodrow Wilson Guthrie in Okemah, Oklahoma. Over his lifetime, he wrote more than a thousand folksongs, ballads, and children's songs. After World War II he began writing songs for his daughter Cathy and her friends. With a hammer and some nails, and a little bit of imagination, Woody and his kids loved to build a "Hoodis" in the backyard.

The simple repetitive text has been fun to use with my students. There are a few resources teachers have posted online about using this book in the music classroom.

It was fine!

If you remember Woody Guthrie, or even if you don't, this is a must. What fun to sing along with this book... " Bling Blang, hammer with my hammer, Zing-o zang-o Cutting with my saw" The sheet music is even printed on the inside of the jacket! Although the collage pictures are not to my taste, the joy of having fun singing this with my baby more than compensates. Kids will probably enjoy the children's artwork at the end of the book more than I.

While this book does not come with the bonus CD that 'Howdi Do' does, it is a great book with wonderful illustrations. But do your child a favor and also purchase the 'Howdi Do' book, you will then get the music CD performed by Band of Weeds, giving a childish musical romp to three of Woody's wonderful songs, including "Bling Blang", by far one of my children's favorites.

Fun book with a simple song. Took my wife and I awhile to get into it, but once you starting singing the book, it all makes sense. No fun to just read it any more.

Cute book/song! My kindergarten and 1st grade classes love this book!
