John Crace reduces all that Gyles Brandreth can teach us about happiness to around 700 words. Finally I know the meaning of happiness. Sometimes my very good friend Paul Merton gets more laughs than me on Just a Minute. But we have to learn to cope with disappointment and move on if we are to find inner happiness. To do that we have to learn these seven simple rules that were handed down to me by my very good friend Tony Blair.

Gyles Brandreth pulls no punches and the picture he paints of the British penal system in the 1890s is vile and stomach turning. The crimes, however, are inventive and clever, and ameliorate the distress of the story's background. I do like the fact that Br This is probably the hardest reads of the Oscar Wilde as detective novels I have read. This is the final book in Gyles Brandreth's excellent series of novels with Oscar Wilde as the protagonist. Against the backdrop of Oscar's fall from grace and inprisonment, murders occur within the confines of prison; initially at Pentonville, finally at Reading Gaol. Oscar is prevailed upon to assist in the investigations. Gyles Brandeth's narrative twists and turns, back-project the action from dialogue between two men who meet 'by chance' in France following Oscar's release from prison.

Brandreth is a well-known broadcaster, but I hadn't realised he was such a prolific writer, having established the real Oscar Wilde in a fictional new career as an amateur detective. Set in the 1880s, mostly in Paris, this is a tale of drinking, drugs, and phenomenal acting Oscar Wilde et les crimes du Vatican (2012). I suppose problem number one is that this is book 5. I haven't had 4 books to build up an appreciation for the character Wilde.
