Paintbox Penguins: A Book About Colors (First Concepts Series) by Diane Palmisciano,Marcia Leonard

This book taught me how to read as a child. It's a wonderful story and perfect for teaching young children how to read. It is a delightful story about two penguins that live in an all white house until an aunt sends them a paintbox full of colors and they use them to make their house a rainbow house as they drip and mix colors to make new ones. In our preschool room we follow reading the book by using finger paint to mix the primary colors and let the children discover what new colors they can make. This is a lesson where we mix literacy with science to teach a new concept.

This book starts at the very beginning, teaching all the fine points about calligraphy with practice drills and easy projects to begin with. Then, new and more difficult skills are introduced gradually through more practice drills and projects. Like other books in the 101 series, the book is written for the absolute beginner with detailed instructions, tips, and quick references all aimed at helping the crafter achieve success.

The first generation Paintbox was principally custom-designed hardware, while the second generation V-Series introduced in 1989 was able to take advantage of general purpose computer hardware combined with custom hardware elements  . Quantel also placed a number of Paintbox IV series systems in art schools in the UK, including Blackpool College where it was used extensively by artist Adrian Wilson to create digital images, including the James album cover for Gold Mother. Two of Wilson's Paintbox pieces were included in the pioneering Art & Computers exhibition at the Cleveland Art Gallery, England, September 1988.

Paintbox Penguins ~ A Book about Colors is one of my favorite children's books to use to introduce the science concept of mixing primary colors to make new colors.
