Mercer Mayer was born December 30, 1943 in Little Rock Arkansas. While attending school at the Honolulu Museum of Art, Mayer decided to enter the field of children's book illustration. He created a portfolio of sketches and peddled them wherever he could. He moved to New York City in 1964, pursuing further instruction at the Art Students League of New York, where he met an artist named Marianna who became his first wife.

Wednesday, April 16, 2008. I know I just did a Mayer a few weeks back, but as I'm still too cheap to break down and purchase this one, it is due back to the library tomorrow. I have to purge all my library books before we head to Mexico for the month of May lest I drown in overdue fees. He had every beast from A to Y, but his collection was incomplete. Extra special treat: I found Mercer doing some book readings on what I have to believe is his Youtube channel, including this one, and they are a riot. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mr. Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps by his home. During his teenage years, he lived in Hawaii where he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts

Professor Wormbog has collected a Kerploppus, an Ickky, a Murgatroy, and a Useless. He has every beastie from A to Y, but he doesn't have a Zipperump-a-Zoo. He looks underground, in the sea, and in the air, and discovers how hard it is to find one - unless the Zipperump-a-Zoo wants to find you! Mercer Mayer creates a world of silly creatures filled with humor for adults and children alike.

Professor Wormbog is missing a Zipperump-a-Zoo from his collection of beasts, so he sets off in search of one—a search that takes him all over the world.

This was a favorite book of mine as a kid. Mercer Mayer created a wonderful world that always kept my imagination running. The illustrations, the little Easter eggs shared between his work, made him a wonderful mainstay during my youth. This book in particular was one that I had searched for for quite some time.

We received this book as a gift for our oldest little one in 1981. We read it and read it over and over again to each new baby that came along (we have 10). Now that they are older and most are married with their own little ones, we have given them a copy to read over and over again. It is our favorite gift for anyone that has a baby as it is ageless and timeless. It is clever, colorful and delightful. We all love it! Everyone that we give it to falls in love with it. Thank you, Mercer Mayer for the gift that we will keep on giving!

My son received this book as a gift when he was about three and it soon became a favorite of both my kids. I was thrilled to be able to order a new copy when his daughter was born (I'd kept the original, which was a larger size, but it's pretty battered). I figured it would be years until she became interested, but she's 22 months old now and it's been her favorite book since she was about 8 months old. The drawings are exceptionally creative and rich with peripheral content that is endlessly fascinating to small people, and each page offers lots of things to talk about with the child. Though not yet two, my grandaughter knows every monster from A-Z, and just loves the idea of little creatures that hide in corners and dance around when no one's looking. I highly recommend this book--and am back buying two more copies for baby gifts.

One of my very favorite books from childhood. The creatures in this book are so fun and the artwork so detailed. I used to make my mom read it to me again and again to try and find new things in the pictures. A great companion book is "One Monster After Another" by the same author, because it has some of the same characters.

Professor Wormbog in Search for the Zipperump-a-zoo is one of the best loved childrens books among three generations of my family. The characters are so original, and creative that just reading the books provides a great pleasure, not only to the children they are read to, but also to the adults who are reading them. Spend the extra few dollars and get the large, hard copy of this one, you will treasure it for years.
One of my favorite childhood books. I am an aspiring children's book illustrator and I can't stop staring at this book, absorbing how genius Mercer Mayer is.
