When I opened the first Trixie Belden book, The Secret of the Mansion, to the first page and read the first sentence, I felt very smug. All my suspicions were confirmed. Oh, Moms," Trixie moaned, running her hands through her short, sandy curls. I discovered Secret of the Mansion in an antique store when I was 11. The story is simple and perfectly formulated for pre teen readers. After unsuccessfully begging for a horse her own from "Moms", Trix spies a horse trailer outside a nearby empty mansion.

Trixie Belden was created by Julie Campbell in the 50s. Her stories reflect a time and lifestyle that has long-since disappeared from mainstream America. The series opener, The Secret of the Mansion, opens at the start of the summer. With her older brothers away at camp, Trixie has an opportunity to earn horse money by helping her mother at the Belden farm, with chores and babysitting her little brother Bobby her mother tells Trixie that that mornin.

The Secret of the Mansion. Book in the Trixie Belden Series). The Trixie Belden series, of which this book is the beginning, is something that I haul out every year and reread. I'm 48 years old-that's a lot of rereading, considering I read them the first time when I was 10! I still have my beat-up Whitman hardbacks of the first 6, with Mary Stevens' wonderful illustrations, and I guard them jealously!

I first read this in the early 1960s and read it to my children in the 1980s. Now I have a grandchild and look forward to reading it to her. I was reminded why it appeals to kids. My daughter also read it last week and agreed. It has a few words and minor issues that date it, but my daughter didn't even notice reference to the runningboard of her father's car, for example. It has friendship, family, horses, dogs, and adventure, I think it needs to be followed by The Red Trailer Mystery (#2) in order to tie up the major loose end left. It's long enough to keep the reader engaged for several sittings and to introduce several interesting characters and different issues. What's not to love?

I loved these as an 11 year old in the 70's and shared them with my daughters in the 90's and beyond. I also work in a public library and will frequently recommend them to 9 and 10 year olds who have read all the Nancy Drew books and are looking for something similar. I enjoy watching the kids get hooked and we end up putting holds on the rest of the series. The stories are timeless. Even though the first one was written in the late 40's, it never enters my head to compare them to today's culture. They stand alone. The personalities of the kids are so vivid and just plain fun - and they have problems that kids today could encounter.

I was especially glad to see the first 4 books made available for audio book. My husband enjoyed them as much as the kids! Ariadne Myers does a superb job covering such a wide variety of voices, from the governess, to the girls, to the villains and Trixie's brothers. Sure would love it if all of the series were made available for audio. I would buy every single one of them.

I had forgotten about this series until I came across it looking for Nancy Drew. I only had one which was well loved. It was like finding an old friend. The book was quick to read. There was a lot of action and some redundancy that took away from the story. All in all, it was a very relaxing and enjoyable read.

I bought this book for my granddaughter, as I read one or two in the series as a child and really loved them. So glad to find the series still available. Love the characters and the story keeps me interested, as Trixie can get herself into some situations. Can't wait to see what my 'oh so modern' granddaughter thinks of life in a different time. And I confess that I'll be enjoying them as well.

I was excited when I saw that Trixie Belden was available on Kindle. I am always looking for books that my daughter can read. I downloaded the sample for her to read, just to make sure she would be interested. She was. She read the book in two days, picking up the kindle as soon as she walked in the door from school. She was constantly reading me passages that she liked. It is a joy to be able to share something with her from my childhood. I bought her books 2 and 3 as well, and all 3 books were read in a week. I can tell already that I am going to have to spend quite a bit of money getting her the whole series.

Trixie Belden is timeless. A must read.

This was my favorite series when I was growing up. I much preferred Trixie Belden to Nancy Drew although I read all of those, too. Trixie is much more relatable. When I am feeling nostalgic, I re-read these stories.

Love all the Julie Campbell Trixie Beldon books. I first read this in grade school and am surprised at how well it holds up. Trixie isn't perfect, nor the prettiest but the most persistent and open hearted. The themes of friendship and ingenuity stands the test of time.
BLUF: No one pays me for my reviews, either good or bad. Amazon asked me my opinion on this purchase, so here it is...
I grew up reading both Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden, and while I enjoyed Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden was always more realistic and believable. Nancy Drew was just too perfect. The problem is, no one knows about Trixie Belden, but everyone seems to know about Nancy Drew! I was thrilled to see the books make it to Kindle format, and I enjoyed reading this book again and reliving how much I enjoyed it as a young girl. I was surprised how much I remembered of the plot, given that I read it over 40 years ago... I was also surprised to see how many more books there were in the series, and I plan to catch up on the ones I missed!
