Waiting for the Magic book. People may drift apart But love can hold them together. Amy Lee Bates' drawings throughout are absolutely charming. Just the cutest things ever. Only black and white, but bursting with kid-appeal. All the way through this book I kept wondering, "What is the point of the talking dogs?" I have no idea why MacLachlan chose to craft her story this way. It's never explained, just accepted-and accepted quickly and simply, as though it's not a surprise at all, really, when you take a moment to think about it. That's what threw me, I guess.

I adore this book. I have shared this book with friends, teachers, and complete strangers. A family struggles with growing up pains and changing dreams. They are supported by four magical dogs and one sassy cat. There is nothing like “Waiting for the Magic”.

"Waiting For The Magic" is a story about a boy whose father goes away to try to do some writing in peace. In the meantime, his mother is having a baby. As soon as the boy's father leaves, him, his mother and his sister adopt four dogs (Grace, Neo, Bitty, and Bryn) at the animal shelter. When you were a kid, did you ever think animals talk? Well, this story takes your imagination, soars it over a sunny sky, through glorious waters, and brings it forth to a high place where imagination rules...

husband goes off because he "needs time to be by himself to write." smart mother takes the kiddies to a pet shelter and they adopt 3 dogs and 1 cat. the children love the animals. the cat, lulu, gets to ride around in a doll buggy and is dressed up too. the dogs form friendships with each child and their mother. husband/father comes back. mother is pregnant. father tries to explain why he runs off to the children. rest of book resolves the problem in an unique fashion. well written book. everyone should read it. helps for relationships. pkj

Awesome, easy read for a child who just started off in novels. This is a must buy and once you read a chapter you dont want to miss the next. We almost always read outloud so the family can enjoy. Wonderful little book, with a challenging vocabulary twist thats good for the appropriate age!

My third grade daughter bought this book for her school at their "library event." She read it very quickly and loved it so much I bought it for her for Christmas. She has read it, again, twice! This book is so "magical" that, eventhough she is on the fourth "Harry Potter" book, she also enjoyed this much simpler tale very, very much. Will be looking for more titles by this author.

It was a good book! The book was about a family who adopts dogs, and a cat. They found lots of love for the animals. The book had lots of chapters, but they were quick and short.

My third grade students loved this book for a read aloud! They were begging, "Just one more chapter...please!"
One of my favorite books ever was BABY by Patricia MacLachlan and since then I've been a huge fan of hers. This short, sweet, amazing book touched my heart and made me smile. And I never can resist talking animal stories. Loved it!
