Mircea Catusanu (Author). PreSchool-Grade 1-With faces reminiscent of the Easter Island Moai statues, 10 quirkily attired sheep cavort under the watchful eye of Doug the Sheep Dog. A wolf living nearby in the Dark Forest decides he needs sheep and tempts one with a piece of candy to follow him. The rest of the flock follows. Doug notices the eerie quiet and abandoned toys where the sheep usually hang out, leaps into a closet, emerges as a costumed hero-Super Sheep Dog-and super-bikes to the rescue.

Super Sheep Dog Doug must find the ten missing sheep who have been lured into the dark forest by a desperate wolf. The sheep usually spend their days gamboling about and having as much fun as possible, and they sleep peacefully every night. The wolf needs those sheep, but not for the reasons readers might assume. This slight tale is brought to life by an imaginative layout and illustrations. The very brief text is in large, bold-faced print, but scattered throughout are also word balloons, banners, directional signs and captions. Pages are filled to the brim with off-the-wall depictions of the action in tones of bright orange and brown.

hey, where'd all the sheep go? In a place called Happy Valley, there live ten sheep. Every night, the ten sheep are counted into their beds by one Super Sheep Dog named Doug. But one day, the sheep are missing! Who could have stolen them? Might it be Wolf, who lives in the Dark Forest?

In a place called Happy Valley, there live ten sheep. Every night, the ten sheep are counted into their beds by one Super Sheep Dog named Doug. But one day, the sheep are missing! Who could have stolen them? Might it be Wolf, who lives in the Dark Forest? And for what nefarious purpose? Does he want to knit them into a blanket? Bake them into a pie? Or maybe he wants to . . . count them?

With kooky, creative illustrations and an unexpected ending that will get kids giggling, this is a lively story about the fun of counting .. . and a bedtime surprise.

It seems that Mr. Catuseanu is empowering a new generation to understand and enjoy the M. Python Circus.
I can even hear the music: Come on baa baa, let's do the twist!
See the ball bouncing.
Look ma! I'm a detective.

The good thing about this book is that there is a lot of detail in the illustrations and my 4 year old likes to study the pictures and talk about them. The story itself, for me, is a bit odd, and I'm not sure my 4 year old understands why the wolf is luring the sheep away with candy and then it ends abruptly with the wolf falling asleep. It was fun to talk about why counting sheep made the wolf fall asleep. My opinion on books is half what my child thinks about it and half what I as the reader think about it. It isn't an easily read outloud book (as far as timing and rhythm). We like different and interesting books but for us this was just average.

What begins as rather an inventive tale ends in a rather pedestrian manner. The illustrations almost save it, but the story ends too happily and with a cheap hero transformation.

As a former first grade teacher and a reading teacher, I found this book to be pertinent for all age readers. It is witty, humorous, chock full of asides which children enjoy discovering and just plain fun. The book is readable and a feast for the eyes as far as the illustrations are concerned.
I highly recommend this book to adults and children alike.

100% Polyester. This old wolf wouldn't hurt a fly, much less a sheep.

So... why does he lure the sheep into the Dark Forest... with candy?

"I need sheep!" the wolf says.

Doug the Super Sheep Dog is on the case, and it resolves nicely at the end. Lots of great mechanical details in the illustrations -- plenty of humor on every page.

My kids love this one. (My youngest is beyond the preschool years).
