Ed Emberley starts where most elementary-aged kids are at (stick figures) and brings drawing to the next immediate level of complexity. No shading, still just two-dimensional, but able to capture more of the world. Children tend to be very methodical and formulaic in their drawing-what they haven't seen others draw before, they tend to lack the imagination and talent to figure out (on their own) the technique for rendering it in a recognizable form  . This is a great book and lots of fun, great for traveling. Reminds me that we need a new stamp pad before our next trip. FYI: Get the kind that is washable.

Easy and fun, these books provide hours of art-full entertainment. com User, July 30, 2002. As a child who loved to draw - but was all "thumbs" in drawing - Emberley's Thumbprintbook was an amazing gift. Suddenly, I could duplicate the art in a drawing book and then go on to create my own shapes and creations.

You can still visit this world today: Ed Emberley’s Great Thumbprint Drawing Book is the key. This book will lead you on the path to a mighty powerful finger. I love this book because it turns a little part of yourself into a little part of millions of different creatures. As a kid, it sparked my imagination, tickled my senses, and made me feel in control of a magical world that was uniquely mine.

This edition has a new cover, but the red thumbprints and "ivy lou" are straight from the original, which could not possibly be improved. I still have my 1977 copy, which has black writing/drawing and red thumbprints.

Although rainbow colors of washable ink pads are widely available now, you don't really need more than one color of ink (like the cover of the book, which makes me think of Easter eggs).

My ink pad was red because that's the color we had in our office/school supplies that wasn't black. My drawings looked just like the book and red makes the black pen/pencil marks for drawn features stand out. I think any color that isn't black would work. Black or other dark colors would make it hard to see your marks, but feel free to use your kid's favorite color or whatever you already own in any medium shade. The color isn't important - it's just Step 1 to give you a shape to work with. Fingerprints are easy because they are already on our fingers, but if you fear inky kids, they could use any stamp, or a carrot or potato, or scrap shapes cut from other paper, to make the body shapes. But don't sweat it too much. Even permanent ink wears off a kid in a few days.

This is one of the first You-Can-Do-This books for art I ever owned. And I only needed office supplies we already had, so no trips to the art store or special tools needed. One ink pad, some paper (pretty much any paper - empty the recycle bin at work if you want), any pen or pencil, and a couple of inky fingers is all you need to follow the step-by-step instructions to make any of the figures he shows, and about anything else you can think of. It's a few very short and do-able marks between blank page and identifiable drawing, even for little kids. (Or for us grown-ups who swear we can't draw.) I cannot recommend it enough!

What a fun book! If I had to leave one critique would be have more pages so there is space for kids to recreate the pictures. There really isn't enough room so we just use the book as reference. Nonetheless, this book is great for kids who love art and creating things with their fingers. I would buy this again.

Ed Emberly is an award winning illustrator of many books. This is the first of his books after Drummer Hoff that I saw. It shows little folk how to make all kinds of drawings when starting out with the thumb or finger print. I have just about all his "how to draw" books, now, but I do believe this is my favorite. He says that these are the books he wishes he had when he was a boy. I am an inept artist. Following his directions which break a picture down to its basic shapes, even I drew a respectable dragon, although my granddaughter and grandson, ages 11 and 7, now, dig great dragons and lions 3 years ago. Your money will never be spent on anything better to contribute to a child's creativity and also beginning handwriting.

I paired this up with Decora Multicolor Ink Pads 12pcs and gave it to my 5 year old daughter. SHe loved it! SO, did my 7 year old son, who never really showed any interest in any type of art. They made fish, toads, skeletons! It was very easy art that made them feel like they were creating something nice. I will buy more Ed Emberley stuff. Super fun!

My Grandchildren love this book. It kept them entertained for many hours. We took plain baseball hats and covered them with thumbprint designs. We also took plain white shirts and they loved making their own designs.

I had this when I was a kid. I got it for my kids when they were little. Now we bought it for our grandson who just used it yesterday for the first time and had a blast. Great for inspiring creativity in little ones. It gave him confidence to come up with his own designs!

We own several Ed Emberley books and enjoy each one. This book is nice for younger children (and up to adults, really) because they are able to make their thumbprints. Adding faces allows them to use basic skills without having to focus on drawing an entire picture. The kids have really enjoyed this addition to our collection.
I got this for my 5 year old for his birthday since I so fondly remember learning to draw things from the Ed Emberley Animals book when I was a kid. These are so fun and easy for young artists that he really got engaged with the book for about an hour. Then my 7 year old came home and wanted to try. Then both kids cut out their cute little creations.

We've had the Ed Emberley Weirdos book for a while, which hasn't gotten much use (maybe a little advanced?). But after using the Thumbprint book, my 5 year old got out the Weirdo book and gave a few Weirdos a try. I highly recommend this Thumbprint book for your kids or to buy as a birthday gift for a child.
