PB3: Smudge is a reall great book with very nice illustrations. The description of the kittens is wonderful and very true to how they are. Between the words and the pictures, the reader can really develop a sense of how the kittens are acting. This book also does a great job at showing how kittens develop as it talks about them opening their eyes and learning to walk. The personalities given to the kittens and their fear of their new world can really resonate with children. I also really enjoyed PB3: Smudge is a reall great book with very nice illustrations  . Another cute Newberry, about the adventures of 3 small kittens, one of them Smudge. My six year old liked it but declined a second reading. Contains unfortunate portrayal of coparenting by a tom, of the 1950s sort- father cat is mildly involved but doesn't quite see what all the fuss is about.

Mama and Papa cats, Muff and Buster, have just added three new kittens to their family-a red one, a multicolored one, and a brave black one named Smudge. I love all of this author's book and illustrations!
This book is beautiful. The illustrations are ethereal and adorable. The story is sweet and old fashioned in a good way. It might be a long read for young children, but I think it's worth it.
It's not neutral colors and relaxing, I like that about books. It's not neon colors and flashy stories with no meaning, just to hold children's attention. It uses some old fashioned terminology and language, but that's a good thing because I don't feel it panders to younger readers.
It's beautiful. Get the book!

This was my very first book by Clare Newberry, and it remains my favorite. The art work is amazing. The cats are so soft and cuddly you just want to pick them up and hold them. I love her artwork and the stories are sweet, not like the new books they have now...like Hunger Games, and they think that that is good for kids. The fist book of Smudge that I got was from 1938 and is just 6 x 5 with no dust jacket, so I ordered another copy, so I could get a book with a dust jacket. Well this book came in the oversized edition of 10 x 12 but with no dust jacket. Still it is wonderful and I will give it to my niece for Christmas. I will try again to get a complete copy for my collection of Newberry books.

I used to read this book as a child a lot when visiting the library. I had to buy it for my own for memory's sake, and to see what I liked as a kid. Such as cute book! Great charcoal illustrations of persian cats. Realistic story but anthropomorphisized.

Umm, as for quality it was like-new, but it has a little note in the front made to a child, as it was a gift. Not a big deal, doesn't change my ability to read the book.

I would recommend this for preschool or early elementary school kids.

Sweet and skillful beyond words.
I love this book for two reasons - one is simply that it's a very cute story. The other is that we have a cat named Smudge who resembles the cat on the cover. We had our Smudge for about a year before we discovered this book, and of course we had to buy it immediately.
