Highlights Hidden Pictures is a huge collection of free hidden pictures put together by Highlights magazine. Hidden Pictures Puzzles. Popular for generations, these puzzles feature a larger detailed scene that usually follows a theme. Within that larger picture are smaller items hidden throughout. Highlights blogger Mary-Alice Moore lists three key skills the puzzles teach: figure-ground perception, object constancy, and visual discrimination. Figure-ground perception is being able to distinguish objects from their backgrounds. Object constancy is being able to recognize, for example, a banana as a banana in multiple pictures even if the bananas are drawn slightly differently in each picture.

My five year old son and I love doing these books! He does (finds and colors) one side, and I do the other.... (slowly of course.... lol) he's gotta 'beat' me 'most' of the time! But, one complaint I have is that the books and even pages within the books become redundant. I would guess that about 40% of each book has a candle to find! It's become a joke between my son and me about whether or not the next puzzle will have a candle!! The candle may take a slightly different shape, but seriously, the designers could come up with some different items to find!

It might even be fun if they threw in some newer items--an in-line skate, or a cell phone? Something that today's kids might recognize as more common than a bell or an 'old-fashioned' tack. These items are quaint, but become pretty boring when they are used in so many of the puzzles.

And, just so you're not surprised, the pages are not colored--except for some b/w and gray coloring, so unless your child enjoys coloring--mine doesn't--you may go quickly through this series of books. Sometimes we color the 'found' object, and sometimes just circle the found object. My son is just not into coloring the whole page.

But, if you want a fun activity to share with your little ones, this will work! The pictures of the items, along with the name of the items to find really helps for the early or non-reader too. I think any of these books in the series (Highlights: Hidden Pictures) is well worth the few bucks you dish out for them.

Also--I think with a bit of help from a reader (older sibling, parent, sitter, etc.) that a much younger child will enjoy the series. My son has been playing with these books since he was four!

Enjoy!

My husband and I love, love, love challenging each other to who can find all of the hidden items first on each page... we've been engaging in this challenge for a long time and haven't tired of it yet! Who says it's just for kids! I will say that I have had to hunt and peck to find all of the Highlights Hidden Pictures books that I've found... they're out there, you just have to look for them, and most of them are priced very inexpensively.

I got this for my 4-year old. He loved this book and wanted to keep doing more and more pages. He finished the entire book in one weekend and was ready for another one. Most of the page are black and white with the stickers being in color so it does make it a little more challenging to find since you can't match up the color of the stickers to the colors of the objects. There were a few items that were difficult to find and were a bit of a stretch. The book has all of the answers in the back so if you do get stuck or want to check and make sure you got them all correctly you can. My son really enjoyed this hidden pictures book and I would purchase different ones in the future.

I ordered this for my almost 3 grandson. He did enjoy finding objects (often with lots of hints from an adult) and putting the stickers where they belonged. It was a good way for us to interact and for him to stretch his mind. However, the style of drawings is very inconsistent. Some were clearly and simply drawn, making finding the objects a pleasure, others were unnecessarily fussy and even the adults had trouble finding things. This would be more useful if drawings were consistent and the books were leveled for different ages and abilities.

Written by my wife:

My four-year old loves searching for hidden pictures. This book is great! On each two-page spread there are roughly twelve items pictured at the top that are hidden in both the left and right-sided scenes. Hence, "double hidden pictures".

Unlike other Highlights books, there are black & white pictures of the items to be found and the scenes are in color. So the book can be used by non-readers. I will say that finding some of the items is challenging even for me, so I'm thankful for the answer key at the back.
our great nephew really loves Hidden Pictures in Highlights. These books also have stickers to mark the pictures as you find them. Since he loves stickers, too, you can't get any better than this as a gift. Purchased with two other editions. Arrived quickly and in perfect condition.
