Don Surath, author of Conquering Cold-Calling Fear: Before and After the Sale and a multimedia solution developer at CBS, never gave anyone in his university courses a grade higher than a 93. But one student got a 98 – and it wasn’t a stereotypical salesperson. This boy wasn’t good-looking. He’s never been popular. And he had a heart condition, so he had to miss a few classes because of treatments, Surath said. Yet he was the only one of 50 students to land a sales meeting. Get Them Practicing on Prospects that Don’t Matter. Practice with other people you don’t care about, he said. Give your salespeople a script to read during calls. Explain to them that people can’t see you. They don’t know you’re reading, Surath said.

Before I read this book, I learned cold calling the hard way. After hundreds of calls, I finally developed my personal approach to cold calls. I picked up this book because I'm always looking to improve my selling techniques. The techniques that the author recommends helped to prepare my mind on how to approach cold calling and also on how to break the ice when someone answers your call. I won't mention the secrets of the book because the techniques are interconnected with each other. I would say this book describes the flow of the cold calling process. By following the author's recommendations, I was able to reach three ultimate decision makers and make three appointments in less than one month. I'm looking forward to see what happens in the second month.

I picked up the book to look for some proven techniques on "cold calling" like the cover states. Unfortunately, less than 20% of the book deals with "cold calling". The author geared this book to their experience in the advertising industry.
There were some very basic ideas that were helpful, but the book just didn't live up to its title "Cold Calling". The book breezes quickly through cold calling, into the first meetings, advertising proposals, creating a commercial, running the commercial, etc.
Unless you're in advertising and interested in the author's expertise in this field, I would recommend trying a different book.
I would also recommend that the author re-title this book more appropriately.

I DONT want to recommend this book to anybody. As a marketing manager, I personally dont want anyone knows the strategies in this book. I am glad to have the book anyways, and I pretty sure I will buy the book if the author has a new one.

Don Surath is a bad teacher and an even worse author

It's fun to read this book because the writer wrote it from his own experience.

I recently started a new business and I found myself doing a lot of cold calling and realized I needed a quick course in the art of sales. This book is a fast and entertaining read, but more importantly, it's very practical. Probably the best thing about it is that the author comes from both perspectives - he owned a shoe store so he bought advertisements, and now he sells advertising for radio. I found it very helpful to hear about the psychological motivation from both angles of buyer and seller. The first half of the book has lots of techniques for phone sales and follow up meetings. The second half has specific info for radio and tv sales, and while not exactly applicable to my field, it is still interesting to know how that industry works and i learned some ideas about interpersonal skills. This book helped me get more organized and confident about my sales routine.
If you've ever had to do cold-calling, you know it stinks. It's like calling up your whole little black book for a date every day, and having everyone's Mom answer and tell you, "No, sorry, Bigwig isn't in today, tonight, tomorrow, or ever." But cold-calling is the key to making sales. There's no getting around it. Mastering this skill is vital. And there are skills! Don Surath has been master of the cold call for years and years, and in this book he tells you how to navigate the dreaded gatekeeper, how to bypass Voicemail Hell, and other hard-won tidbits of practical advice that you can use on your next call. Really useful stuff. Try it.
