Paul B. Brown (Author). A wonderful book with ample examples and food for thought for new and ongoing managers. This text was initially referred to me by a business school professor and I've since passed it on to freinds and managers alike.

Leading People is an excellent guide for leaders. It provides not only an understanding of what a. leader is and what skills they need, but also practical examples of how to be a leader. A chapter is dedicated to each of the eight principles of leading people: vision, trust, participation, learning, diversity, creativity, integrity, and community. Each of these chapters are then broken into further components of these skills, and each component is accompanied by a business. leaders real life success story. In "Leading People," nationally renowned business consultant Robert Rosen offers a practical yet visionary blueprint for leadership and business success.

"Leading People" by Robert H. Rosen and Paul B. Brown is like surfing the crests of leadership thought. And just when you think he can't add anything else, he does. This book is an accumulation of 36 stories of successful business people about which Rosen & Brown attempt to give their common experiences some enhanced theoretical meaning. Rosen's background as a psychologist is evident as his analysis lacks the "conditions on the ground" outlook that one would typically find from someone who actually ran a business. Much of the book is spent describing what good management looks like and what happens when you hire good people and have a good leader, but offers little help in what to do to actually achieve that blissful state. The last sentence of "Leading People" is characteristic of the broad generalizations throughout: "Mature, wise leaders make it all happen." Much like the advice to make money in the stock market that one should buy "low and sell high." It is not that what he says is incorrect or completely off-base, but rather that it is not as useful in expanding one's leadership skills as it could or should be for the time involved in reading it. If you are looking for greater depth or definitive leadership DNA, pass on this one.

An insightful approach, given that most books about "real change" (which seldom happens) focus externally, rather than internally. Real Change, according to Rosen, incorporates eight principles of the hard work of leading vs. mere posturing: vision, participation, learning, diversity, creativity, integrity, and community --- using wisdom as the implementation tool. Think this is impossible to do? There are rich examples of living/working people in existing organizations doing authentic inside-out transformation. A wonder-full challenge to the image managers who skim the surface and miss opportunities to be the butterfly wings that fan the potential wellness of organization health and evolution toward higher, more satisfying levels of functioning, both individually and collectively

It is an impressive publication that can be used as a tool for anyone in a leadership capacity. Transformation in the way we approach leadership is long-overdue, both in the corporate and the non-profit. This book lays it on the line and lights the way. Excellent.
