I read this book to augment my graduate-level Project Management course. I knew of the author's reputation as an instructor and a pioneer. The book lived up to my expectations.

Mr. Lewis covered the major aspects of managing a project very concisely and expertly. Here for example are the four reasons he gave for consensually estimating a task's duration:

1. No one person is "on the hook" for the estimate. If it turns out to be significantly off, no individual will get chastised for it.

2. Inexperienced team members will learn from the more experienced ones. Their ability to estimate improves.

3. Collectively, the team will be more likely to think of all the factors that may affect the time required to do the task. An individual is more likely to omit some of them. (This is an instance where more heads are better than one.)

4. I, as the PM, will receive a higher psychological commitment to the estimate than would be true if a single individual came up with it.

This is all fine and dandy but how can I use it?

It becomes another arrow in my quiver, so to speak. I can use it to clearly articulate the advantages of consensual estimating to anyone who challenges the idea. How many times do we run into a stakeholder who questions the need to "waste" time and effort coming up with a consensual estimate?

This is an excellent book for all project managers. The concepts are presented with lots of examples which makes it easy to read. The chapter on EAV is great!!
Recommended for all new to PM and a reference book for all practicing PMs. It should serve as a handy reference book for all level of PM's.

The book is too vague on the topics with too many general concepts and rules. There should be more concrete examples to illustrate how the concepts that the author is promoting worked in real life. Reminds me of Rich Dad/Poor Dad.

As the tittle implies this book is predominantly about the project planning, control and the techniques used to help achieve the management of successful projects. It does however also discuss, although in less detail, other management areas, including the management, motivation and control of people working on projects. The topic of this book is such a huge subject it is unrealistic to believe that it is possible that one book could cover, in depth, every conceivable area in relation to this subject. Indeed there are hundreds of books on the market that discuss single project management techniques in detail and as such this book does not attempt to make the reader an expert in every possible area of this subject. This book does however attempt to impart knowledge, to the reader, to a level that they are able to understand and apply the tool and methods discussed within. Because of this book can be a useful aid to both a new comer to the subject or a manager that has been working form many years. Neither type of reader will be left grappling for understanding or be left feeling that they are being treated far below their level. If a reader wishes to gain a deeper understanding of any of the topics discuss this book also contains many references and recommendations of books to read to do so. As well as explaining much of the current knowledge of this topic it aids the teaching of these ideas by making you think about the ideas that are being expressed with the aid of stories of real life situations and anecdotes By doing this James Lewis is able to display the advantages, pitfalls of these methods and the common misconceptions and misunderstandings that can make the application of these ideas a success or failure. I can only recommend that every one connected with project management reads this book and retains a copy on their desk for future reference guidance.

When you look at the goals of this book they are things like develop a methodology that works, using common tools like PERT, CPM, setting up communications within the team; in essence the real things that make a project successful. This also means that you learn enough that if you want to take the PMP test, you have the background and understanding to pass it.

This is the fourth edition of a book initially published in 1991. As the author says, it is written for the practitioner rather than the classroom. There are a number of books on passing the PMP exam. Most of them teach to the questions on the test without going into what you are really trying to do as a project manager. This book is different. It covers what it really takes to manage a project, and it does so with words that are easy to understand with photographs that are meaningful to the text.

This is the best book I know of to use when you really want to understand what project management is all about.
I thought so much of this book that I recommend it to all new project managers in my company. Considering both the human and technical sides of project management, the book provides a great step by step approach to the subject. It is this direct applicability to the work of a project manager that makes the book so good. The Project Management Institute's Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) gives information about all aspects of project management - James Lewis's book brings this to life by showing you how to actually execute many of the processes. If I was ever to write a book about project management, which I might, it would probably look like this book, so it saves me the effort!
