It is true that the poet does not directly address his neighbors; but he does address a great congress of persons who dwell at the back of his mind, a congress of all those who have taught him and whom he has admired; they constitute his ideal audience and his better self  . Richard Wilbur obituary. US poet laureate, translator and Pulitzer prizewinner with the ability to touch unsettling truths beneath the surface in his work. In 1957, when he won the Pulitzer prize for his third book of poetry, Things of This World, Richard Wilbur, who has died aged 96, was clearly one of the leading young poets in the US. He combined seemingly casual elegance with painstaking craft, and his ability to touch unsettling truths beneath the surface made him heir apparent to Robert Frost. In the 30 years following his Pulitzer, Wilbur produced only five more collections, one of which, Walking to Sleep (1969), won the Bollingen prize; he received his second Pulitzer for New and Collected Poems (1988). He also established himself as Molière’s finest translator with seven plays, starting with his rhymed English version of The Misanthrope (1955).

A Plain Song For Comadre by Richard Wilbur. A World Without Objects is a Sensible Emptiness by Richard Wilbur. Advice to a Prophet by Richard Wilbur. Boy at the Window by Richard Wilbur. Epistemology by Richard Wilbur. Exeunt by Richard Wilbur.

Richard Wilbur, for me, was an exemplar. I read his work and choked up. His sentiments were gracefully constrained, passionate all the same, and often overwhelmingly beautiful (. his anthem for life-long love, For C), but the craft was dazzling. Mayflies inspired me in form as well as in image. He was a fine gentleman. Ruth Stalker (11/16/2017 9:20:00 AM). Where is On the Marginal Way by Richard Wilbur? Nancy Howell (8/20/2015 4:54:00 PM).

Richard Wilbur was born on March 1, 1921 in New York City. One of the most lauded and honored poets of 20th century American verse, Wilbur was the second poet laureate of the United States, succeeding Robert Penn Warren. Daniel Boorstin, the Librarian of Congress, announced Wilbur as a poet for all of us, whose elegant words brim with wit and paradox. During his lifetime, Richard Wilbur won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for his collection Things of This World: Poems in 1957 and a second Pulitzer for New and Collected Poems (1988).

Richard Wilbur, a twentieth-century American poet and translator who writes in traditional poetic forms, is known for his attention to craft, his subtle wit, and intellectual rigor. Wilbur's poems concern the ways in which beauty transforms our lives and the need for imagination and inspiration to be grounded in everyday objects and experiences.
