OK, even though I know Shannon, the author, I am not writing this review out of some sort of loyalty to her. I have only known her as an adult, and reading the story of her young years has brought me to near pants-wetting laughter at numerous times. Natalie's voice is strongly developed as well, and both sisters have a way of playing off of one another that allows the reader to visualize what it must have been like to grow up in a house with either one of them, or at least in a neighboring Barbie dreamhouse.

Several times I found myself relating to one or the other, depending on the circumstances, and reading this memoir has brought up many memories of my own; it's sure to do the same for anyone who reads it, but particularly teens and adult women. Read on!

Great, fast read. Interesting story of two very different sisters with completely different points of view. Love how the book is separated by alternating perspectives from the two sisters. Anyone with a sister whom they love, but gets on their nerves should read this memoir. Mostly about the older sister growing up and how her sister perceived the happenings.

For a memoir, I thought this was poorly written. This book is supposed to be full of strong characters, but most were never developed enough to get a sense of their character. Was their mother an overprotective neurotic? Was their father a silent guy, but loving? I didn't get a full grasp of who any of the side players were. The only person who got developed was their Grandmother, who I felt they used. She's the only person with distinctly tacky behaviour and I felt that the authors ate that all up and when they finished exploiting her oddness, then ripped her to shreds for being a bad mother to their mother. I'm not defending the grandmother for what a cruel mother she was, but I am saying the authors used her for some trashy laughs, then tore her apart.
If Shannon expected people to come off liking her in this book, I sure didn't. First off, this memoirs is supposed to center around sibling rivalry, but the only rivalry Shannon speaks of is being jealous of a new baby in the house as a pre-schooler (umm, join the club) and at the end she vaguely mentions how she would've liked to have been the "quiet" one at times. Whatever. Other than that, she retells tales of her childhood that she perceives are precocious, but in reality she came off as a narcissistic, self-interested, opportunistic, manipulative, obnoxious brat. And basically comes off the same way growing up throughout the whole book. She also comes off as incredibly shallow and overdramatic. She whines about trivial things, like comparing her over bearing mom (I guess she was supposed to be over-bearing) to being as bad as an abusive mom. It seems like all her life she's had this perception that she's the "Center of the Universe" and the reader can tell that this author is still incredibly full of herself as she thinks that her own story is so interesting that people will care.
I will say that this book gets the extra star from me for Natalie's material. She actually brought this book back to it's main point, sibling rivalry. Shannon provides the (oooh incredible!)stories of her life, and Natalie writes about them as well from the viewpoint as the quiet overshadowed tomboy of the family. She came off as more thoughtful, sincere, and relatable. While I am the oldest child of the family (of 3 sisters) I felt I could certainly relate to her more.

Memoirs are THE thing right now in the book world. Everyone's writing them, and I love to read them. When I found this book in the discount bin at Borders, I had high hopes for it seeing as I also have a sister, and the beginning of the relationship was torture, to say the least. The thing with memoirs is, because they are so many out there right now, your story has to be extraordinary. It HAS to stand out from all the others in a way that makes the book unforgettable, or at the very least, entertaining.

This book didn't even come close to unforgettable or amazing. It was horribly boring. I couldn't even finish it. My own family (my sister included) is much more entertaining, and while I didn't think that the writing was as horrible as the lack of exciting stories, both authors failed to find that narrative voice that could have made the book more appealing. The story itself didn't lack idiosyncrasies, but in this world, every family has a crazy, dysfunctional side, so memoirs need to be especially crazy. The back of the book says this "is not another dysfunctional family memoir ... " but when, in fact, it is.

Now I know why it was in the half off bin. SO disappointed!

I just finished this yesterday and I really enjoyed it. It's not the best I've ever read, but it was good. This book has short chapters, alternating the voices of two sisters, Natalie and Shannon. It's interesting to hear each of their perceptions regarding their childhood and the outlooks of two very different women. There were some surprising turns; some happy and some sad. I loved how open they were about their thought process and personalities. Definitely worth reading.

I picked up this book because my sister and I have been opposites for years. It's always nice to look in on someone else's world and realize you aren't the only family of crazed lunatics. Enjoyed the read.

The small town Sisters seem to give themselves a self-fullfilling prophecy

with Barbie doll play at a young age. This very delightful tale is one of best book I have read. It's well written and has a certain charm. I hope to read more from these authors in the future. Nice work!
I found this memoir to be sweet and familiar, and enjoyed the resonating themes within my family and the Krings'. The description was meticulous and vivid, and the telling between two sisters balanced and varied in voice.
