Atta Kim by Atta Kim,Christopher Phillips

Atta Kim first won wide attention in the . in 2001, when he took part in Translated Acts: Performance and Body Art from East Asia, a traveling exhibition that appeared at the Queens Museum. Although Atta Kim’s photographs have subsequently been seen in numerous international group shows, his work does not fit easily within the usual categories of contemporary art. Notable for their cinematic scale, dramatic composition, and technical perfection, his photographs are certainly among the most striking works to be seen today.

Christopher Phillips has been a curator at ICP since 2000. He has organized such exhibitions as Delmaet and Durandelle: The Construction of the Paris Opera (2001), The Rise of the Picture Press (2002), Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China (2004), Atta Kim: On-Air (2006), Heavy Light: Recent Photography and Video from Japan (2008), Eugène Atget: Archivist of Paris. 2010), and Wang Qingsong: When Worlds Collide (2011).

In the earliest pictures the figures were nude, often crouched in fetal position. In the work in this New York solo show, organized by Christopher Phillips, narrative and overt symbolism are played down. Where The Museum Project often graphically illustrated ideas - of preservation and decay, corporality and spirituality - the new pictures subtly embody them. And although Mr. Kim is careful to assert that he is not a practicing Buddhist, core Buddhist concepts shape the new work. One is the notion that change, or transience, is the only concrete reality, and that time as a quantifiable, linear entity is a mirage. All time and no time are the same

Atta Kim is a South Korean photographer who has been active since the mid-1980s  . Kim began experimenting with photography in junior high school, though he never studied it academically. His work during college was mostly abstract; dissatisfied with the results, he decided to explore the outside world and to photograph people from various backgrounds and stages of life. His first exhibited series was "Psychopath" in 1987, which were portraits of mentally ill patients.

This is the most comprehensive look to date at the work of Atta Kim, one of Korea's most distinctive contemporary artists. Born in 1956, Kim uses photography to create dramatic, large-scale works that reflect his fascination with philosophical questions. The "Deconstruction Series" (1992-95) features disconcerting images of seemingly lifeless men and women whose naked bodies are scattered like seeds in open fields and desolate natural settings. In the "Museum Project" (1995-2002), Kim poses people drawn from a wide range of social types in clear acrylic boxes lit like museum vitrines and placed in a variety of urban and natural locations. These images of what he ironically calls "contemporary treasures" provide an unusual perspective on contemporary approaches to sexuality, materialism, politics and religion. For the large-scale, visually spectacular color photographs of the "On-Air Project" (2002 to the present), Kim employed extended exposures--sometimes as long as eight hours--to explore fundamental questions of time and perception. Using such varied subjects as parliamentary sessions, soccer games, outdoor military exercises and erotic unions, he suggests the ephemerality of human existence, and that it is possible for us to perceive the passage of time in radically different ways. Atta Kim includes a career-spanning interview with the artist by ICP curator Christopher Phillips.

Atta Kim is an important photographer. This book provides ample evidence as to why he is. Rather than turn his camera on the world to show the things he finds interesting, Kim has made pictures for the past two decades that make visible his ideas about existence. A masterful photographer, he uses the camera to make us see the world in a way we hadn't quite imagined. You will want to have this book among your photography and art books. Atta Kim is simply one of the best and most interesting photographers working today.
