Peter Lindbergh on His Women, His New Book, and What Makes a Photograph Iconic. I’ve been shooting her for nearly 38 years, maybe, Lindbergh says of Rampling, and all of the adjectives that I would use to describe her are really unbelievable. You cannot imagine anybody more beautiful-" Here, the photographer stops himself. Probably ‘different,’ no?

A Different Vision on Fashion Photography. Coinciding with his major retrospective at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, Netherlands, this book gathers more than 400 images from four decades of Lindbergh’s photography to celebrate his unique and game-changing storytelling and the new romantic and narrative vision it brought to art and fashion. Whether in striking single portraits or dramatic situations of figure and setting, we trace the photographer’s cinematic inflections and his provocative play with female archetypes as subjects adopt the guise of dancers, actresses, heroines, and femmes fatales.

After his "aperitif" book of models, Ten Women, which was a world success within five months of publication, Peter Lindbergh presented in 1997 his long-awaited larger title Images of Women, comprising the creative essence of his photographic work. Images of Women contains Lindbergh’s classic fashion photos, his great portraits of actresses and pop stars such as Madonna, Tina Turner, Demi Moore, Milla Jovovitch, Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Rampling, Daryl Hannah, and many, many more— and, of course, all the photos of his supermodels that he has been saving up for his larger book. Images of Women thus provides a comprehensive overview of twenty years of artistic work of the highest level, showing Peter Lindbergh in his favourite role—as a man who loves women.

This collection features some of the most dramatic portraiture I can remember - that cover picture (Berri Smither) being just one example. Page 45 features a handsome woman with strong features, an even gaze directly out of the page, and ambiguously seductive pose. Other images emphasize physical power, grace, androgyny, tribute to Josephine Baker, and many more thoughts, often in complex combinations. Fans of nude photography will find relatively few samples here, but it does explore a lot of the gray area between clothed and not.

The one thing this collection brings out most is variety - the different faces of beauty (within the twenty-something range, at least), the different roles women take on, and more. I recommend this to anyone who takes a thoughtful attitude toward women's beauty.

My kid brother bought this for me at a used bookstore in San Francisco when I first started shooting with a medium format camera. It's one of the best gifts I've ever received and a primary influence photographically.

It's been out of print since '97 and used paperback copies have been going for way too much money. I've been carefully handling loose pages that have been peeling off destroyed binding because I still reference this book on a very regular basis.

Lucky for you, it's finally been rereleased in hardback in conjunction with a museum exhibit of his work that goes by the same name. If you're a photographer, have any interest in visual art, or just love fashion, it's a must have. You'll thank me later!

Very large and well printed art book. A strong showing of Peter Lindberghs photographs of women.

One of the most noteworthy fashion and editorial portrait photographers of the last thirty years most noteworthy books. I was so pleased to see it back in print after a long absence. FIVE STARS!

I like the book. I would have expected more photos of day to day women and not 99% models. But having said that, I love Lindbergh's syle and the fact that the book is in black and white.

If you are a Lindbergh fan this is a must own book. I'm glad to see the reissue ... as older editions are so expensive that the average person couldn't afford it if they found it a few years ago.
