Design is the single most important factor in creating a successful photograph. The ability to see the potential for a strong picture and then organize the graphic elements into an effective, compelling composition has always been one of the key skills in making photographs. London: Studio Books; 1963. The Image (Collins Photography Workshop). London: Collins; 1988. Achieving Photographic Style.
This second volume in the Collins Photography Workshop Series deals with photographic composition and design. Many different aspects are covered; there are sub-sections on colour theory, the dynamics of the frame, visual weight, proportion, balance, lines of view, reprise, dynamic tension and more. The success or failure of a book like this depends on the quality of the examples, since if these are poor the reader has little reason to think that they will be able to do better as a result of reading the book. This book deals with the image and the making of it. No matter whether you're using film or digital or painting a cave wall with your big toe, this book is worth reading as it contains valuable pointers to getting it right. I've just read it for the third time in twenty years and can thoroughly recommend it - it's pretty timeless and even though it was first published in 1988 it stands the test of time easily.
