I could not put down Ellen Burstyn's "Lessons In Becoming Myself" after I read through the first thirty pages or so. The book draws directly from Burstyn's personal diary, kept since childhood, providing plenty of detail. I had to adjust to the writing style, particularly in the beginning, since it reads like a diary, not an autobiography. Despite that, this searingly honest memoir will grab you as she charts her journey for authenticity and truth. I was so excited to see this book from Ellen Burstyn having been a huge fan of her as an actress, and did not expect what I read. She acknowledges her own faults but uses them as a springboard to the next level of understanding herself.

In Lessons in Becoming Myself, Burstyn describes her personal missteps and how confronting them encouraged her to find a different life path. Raised a Catholic, Burstyn has spent her life exploring a wide range of spiritual experience-from the Himalayas to Cambodia, from Mont Blanc to New York City-that goes deeper than labels. Lessons in Becoming Myself is the extraordinary story of the quest for the examined life. By turns thoughtful and funny, insightful and lighthearted, it is a brilliant accomplishment by one of the finest observers of human nature. I was drawn to this book because of the title. I am always trying to find out who I really am. Ellen Burstyn managed to write her life's work in 452 pages. That's no small feat. Most of the book is deliciously interesting.

I *love* this book. There are many valuable perspectives and reminders about our choices in responding to life's inevitable challenges. Without any preaching, Burstyn's self-exploration is a powerful model for seeking support for not merely surviving hardship but thriving in the face of pain. It's so inspirational I have listened to it 4 times, and I'm sure I will listen again. It has also prompted me to watch her movies, which are made more meaningful having heard her experiences in the process of making them. Highly recommended.

Ellen Burstyn has been someone I've always known was one of the most important actresses of my time here on Earth, but I never realized how "human" she was until I read this book. Her life seems to be much more than acting. She's giving back--in a very spiritual way. I'm a recipient of what she's given the world, and I appreciate that very much.

I'm listening to this 8-disc book and LOVING it! She is painfully honest about her abusive childhood and her own mistakes. It makes me realize that the beautiful, successful people I see on TV may not always have it as good as it seems. There is a lot of pain underneath her success. This book makes me love her!

I did not know very much about her before listening to this. Her voice is beautifully rich and her writing is so very honest and refreshing. By the end I felt as if I had spent some time with a kindred spirit.

I listen to the Ellen Burstyn read her book and she almost instantly became a friend. Her life was extremely filled with ups and downs and so many things even "us ordinary mortals" could relate to. I loved it and when it was over wanted more.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I love that Ellen read it herself on the CD.
