Making Music: The Guide to Writing, Performing & Recording by George Martin

How to Write Popular Music - How to Perform Music - How to Record Music - How the Music Business Works - George Martin is one of the world's most celebrated record producers. He is best known for launching the Beatles by giving them their first recording contract, and he produced every Beatle Album. Very rich content, great interviews and an inside scoop on the music business of the '80s. I rate it 4 because half of it is about outdated rec and production techniques, but still gives you the picture about how music was being made back then. One person found this helpful.

Bought this book used from Amazon and I can say it's a great music book. Very rich content, great interviews and an inside scoop on the music business of the '80s. I rate it 4 because half of it is about outdated rec and production techniques, but still gives you the picture about how music was being made back then. It is a good reference book as well! I keep it in the shelf among my recording and mastering books, right beside my Grove music dictionary!

It's a little dated, but you know anything by George Martin is bound to have some gems. I still find some good thoughtful, if not useful information in here.

I first read this book in the library, then purchased it. I re-read it often.
This book is a collection of essays by a BUNCH of different artists, on a BUNCH of different musical topics.
For example:
Paul Simon Talks about songwriting and melody, Steven Sondheim talks about words, Quincy Jones talks about how everyone he's ever worked with is "a beautiful person", etc, etc. Everyone has their area of expertise.
I suppose everyone thinks that just because this book was published in 1983 (and has never been updated), that it is therefore WORTHLESS.

I disagree.
Beardana
insight to the music making industry by some of the best people out there. A little out dated on technology of today but the insights remain the same.
Paxondano
The condition was perfect from Goodwill, and the packing excellent. The book is a touch outdated in some areas, but it's still a fun read.
SING
A little dated now - especially sections on recording, but very interesting and informative about the song writing and arranging process with some great interviews
Had this book 30 years ago.. bought it again for my son who loves it too!
