This little book contains many insights both for performing and practicing intelligently, and is filled with musical examples from the standard literature. The explanation of rubato is straightforward and especially well-detailed (receiving an entire chapter), and by itself is worth much more than the price of the book.

Matthay had pianists primarily in mind, but even if you don’t play that instrument, a lot of what he has to say will still apply to whatever form of music-making you’re engaged in, including composition and teaching. In other words just about any musician can benefit from this book -- it should never have been out-of-print!

The only real shortcoming is that Matthay makes many verbose digressions, with a consequent lack of focus at times, but which may be accounted for in part by the fact that some or all of it is a transcription of a lecture(s), possibly informal.

Thanks to Forgotten Books too -- this book deserves much better than the cheap presentation that company offers, but notwithstanding that problem, better some sort of print than none at all!
