A splendid book that uses gorgeous photographs with just the right amount of authoritative text. Let's face it. Most of the songs are jingles and tripe that made a buck for tin pan alley hacks(yeah, that could describe modern radio fare, too). Berlin and Polla were among the few to pair decent melodies with the lame greeting card quality lyrics. The period art, oftentimes by acclaimed artists, is why we are here. This book excels at displaying that incredible artwork. As with all these guides, the price list is of dubious value. This is more of an overview and introduction, a good one, to what is available in some of the sheet music genres. Other books have far more pieces listed but are skimpy on photographs, requiring one to perform a search to determine if they like the art. My specialty was covered very well, except for one thing. Inexplicably, no M. Emma Musselman sheet music covers were included and A.J. Stasny Music Publishing got shorted a bit. For example, Take Me 1920 A.J.Stasny Pub. is one of the most pinned pieces of sheet music at Pinterest and is all over the internet as an example of "beautiful Victorian art" (should be called Edwardian) but didn't get included. It isn't included in the alternative volume, the highly researched Sheet Music Price And Reference Guide by Guiheen/Pafik, either. I don't understand. Nonetheless, my favorite sheet music book. When you see these pictures, you'll be hooked on vintage sheet music. A fantastic coffee table book. Docked a half star for being printed in China.
