Longing was to have been Dusty Springfield's second LP for the ABC Dunhill Records label, and ninth studio album overall, recorded in 1974 and planned for release the same year. Most of the Longing recordings were mixed and released much later on the compilations Simply Dusty (2000) and Beautiful Soul: The ABC Dunhill Collection (2001)

When shy convent girl Mary O'Brien reinvented herself as Dusty Springfield, one of the most glamorous, accomplished, and acclaimed pop divas of the 1960s was born. Drawing on meticulous archive research and interviews with Dusty's friends and collaborators, this comprehensive reference addresses the entire arc of Dusty's career in details, and includes more than 70 pictures of Dusty live and in the studio. This revised edition includes new chapters on the Lana Sisters and the Springfields, expanded entries on Dusty's solo tracks, and an in-depth analysis of Dusty's live work for TV and radio.

In between the covers of this informative tome, you will find everything and anything you've ever wished to know regarding the recordings of the fabulous Dusty Springfield. Paul Howe has given us quite a gift in writing something like this, and most especially since the reissues of her music have been fast and furious since her untimely death in 1999. The work and effort that went into undertaking a writing such as this simply boggles the mind. It is a true labor of love and one that I refer to often while trying to obtain some of the recordings I had lost due to an unfortunate circumstance. God bless you Paul Howe...Dusty must be smiling from ear to ear knowing the level of your great respect and how deeply you felt and still feel about her. PS: The photographs of Dusty he has included are worth their weight in gold as well. Thanks...thanks a lot!

Mr. Howes has produced a masterpiece,
This is not a personal bio or "tell all",
except to the songs, performers, and of course,
dear dear Dusty. I call it "my Dusty musical bible".
Every single one of her songs, both in studio and live,
are meticulously covered. True music lovers and
Dusty fans DO want to know who her back-up singers
were, where she was, how she did it and felt about each song.
Mr. Howes honours a beautiful legend with this thorough and
priceless book.

Details dates of each recording. Was hoping it would contain info on Dusty talking about each song. More of a chronicle of Dusty's entire career. Shows dates of all of her engagements. Enlightens readers that Dusty was a female pioneer in the studio and basically ran the show regarding the entire production and arrangements. Controlled how all of the instruments were played and sounded. She went to great pains to get the perfect sounding recordings that she gave us.. All of her perfectionism in the studio paid off. Great color photos of Dusty.

The lists don't stop there; the book goes on to list UK and US Radio and TV appearances and which songs she performed on them, ditto concert and cabaret appearances, a diary of Dusty's life events, US and UK discographies, and so much more.

This book rightly focuses on what's important: the musical legacy of Dusty Springfield. I was surprised by how meticulously detailed and researched this book was. Five stars and highly recommended reading even for casual fans.

Dusty Springfield was a legend in the music industry. She was tough and a perfectionist without apologies. This book is about her music legacy and not about her personal problems with addiction or her sexual orientation. There's more to her person than who or what she sleeps with. Dusty was one of a kind. She died too soon at 59 just when she got awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) on her deathed and died two weeks before her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Sadly, there is one honor that I think she should receive and that is the Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording. If I only had $25,000 dollars to spare, I would do it for Dusty.

What a terrific read, tabloid free. This book is just about the music, a song by song description like excellent liner notes listed by alphabetic order as opposed to chronology. The reverence Paul Howes holds for Dusty, it's evident by the loving track by track annotation. The candid snapshots are a plus and the unreleased recordings adds intrigue and hope that the unreleased surviving recordings will see the light of day

The title says it all. It really DOES contain all her recorded songs. If you want a compendium of her work, this is it. Available in hard cover, as well as paperback. This book in paperback is the one that is included on Dusty's most recent "Goin Back" boxed set (a "box set" is a set of boxes.).
All facts. I donated it to the library.
